Judy's Story
July 15, 2016....milestone year! Just turned 70 on the 13th. For me a blessing since my dad kept telling me I am just like my mom who died when she was 34, and he has continued to remind me yearly that I'm still here against all odds! He by the way is 98 and lives in CA. I live in upstate NY and have four children: two sons, two daughters, 12 grandchildren and two great grands. I retired from early from Alfred State College to take care of my husband Bill who had lung cancer. Bill passed away in 2007.
While my youngest daughter is in Texas and I visit her at least once a year, the other three children are close by: two in Campbell and one in Corning and I see them frequently. I have a friend with whom I travel to Auburndale, FL a couple of times a year and I take day trips on Covered Wagon Tours but other than that, I prefer to be home. I entertain a great deal since my passion is cooking. My love of cooking has passed on to one of my twin granddaughters who is now a chef at a large casino here in Upstate after graduating from ASC culinary school. (I have two sets of twin granddaughters). Actually my passion has been picked up by all of my children--they all love to cook! Great legacy.
You know, I am hard-pressed to think of stand-out moments in school. Most are ...Expand for more
all good. There was one absolutely horrible day for me personally, and I guess everyone has at least one moment. Mine was when I received my "Rainbow" sweater (daughters of Eastern Star) and Marilyn Troncone "called me out" to beat me up after class. I sat in school terrified all day knowing I'd have to walk out and face her. It was horrible! Juanita Odom walked out with me. I got jumped and fought back. Marilyn was suspended and I think I got detention because people went to bat for me but I felt so degraded and I never wore the sweater again. The guys could wear their DeMolay (sons of Masons) sweaters without event but for this small group of girls, no such luck.
And there was the day that Mr. Vanderheusen's son died, and Emily Schavone (spelling is probably wrong) drowned. She had the most lovely voice. These are moments of tragedy. And we all sat stunned when we learned of JFK's death.
Sportsnight was one of the best nights, yearly! Practicing and getting to it was always fun. Judy Markoe and Cheri Henry were such strong classmates. Walking the halls to favorite classes, joking before the teachers began to speak, sharing private jokes with friends, Nathan's after school, Chwatsky's, growing up where we were the center of our world. We were all so blessed!
