Richard's Story
I got my BA in Music and Theater from Yale in 1985. In 1986 I moved to New York, where I spent some years working in theater (wrote music for a production of Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" starring Sigourney Weaver, for example) and freelancing as a choral singer before getting my Master's degree in Composition at the Mannes College of Music. While still a student I met and married my wife Jean, and after finishing my degree I co-founded the six-man vocal ensemble Lionheart. Our CDs are on the Nimbus, KOCH, and...Expand for more
Cantaloupe labels. We've been all over the U.S. and Europe, but we've never performed in Oregon, where I grew up.
Now I'm finishing my dissertation in Music Theory at the City University of New York (CUNY), and teaching at Mannes. Last spring I gave a lecture on Gregorian Chant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; you can see it on YouTube under the title "Sounding Illuminations."
Jean and I have a son, Siegfried, who was born in 1999 (that's him in the picture with me).
I look forward to hearing from old classmates.
