Susan's Story
I was a career woman for many years - in law enforcement, teaching, in the travel business, banking, and even spent time as a chocolatier. Now I write and do photography to keep myself busy and try to stay out of trouble. I also paint (mostly watercolors) and have sold some of my work - so I guess that makes me an artist too.
My husband is from Saudi Arabia. We moved to Jeddah, a city on the Red Sea, in the fall of 2007. It's been quite the exciting adventure! I am fortunate in that I am able to spend the hot summer months each year in the US, in the cool Seattle area, where our kids and my brothers Roy and Barry live.
We have two kids and three grandkids - all in the US.
My 4 brothers that you may remember:
Roy (DHS Class of 1968) retired as an airline captain for AA in 2011 and lives in the Seattle area.
Doug (Class of 1971) is a retired mining engineer, a grandfather, married to Renee Willcox and lives in Utah.
Gary (1975) retired from the NCAA and now lives in San Diego.
Barry (1980) teaches voice, is an opera singer, and lives in the Seattle area.
My mom Trudy passed away in July of 2012 at the age of 87.
Because I blog about living in Saudi Arabia, it has opened doors for me in ways I could have never imagined. ...Expand for more
Living in KSA has exposed me to a world that many don't get the opportunity to see or experience - and for that I am eternally grateful. I've been invited to participate on panels and special events because of my blogging. My photos have been used in magazines, books, school projects, and newspapers, and for Jeddah Art Week promotional materials. I've spoken in schools and given presentations to various groups in the US and in Saudi. It's been a very rewarding experience for me because my blogging has made an obvious difference to many people who read what I write - and that makes it very rewarding for me.
I have a Facebook group called Susie of Arabia that has over 20,000 members where we have lively discussions about Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. If you're interested in seeing my blogs about life in Saudi Arabia, just Google "Susie of Arabia" and they will come up.
I am also the founder of a Douglas Facebook group called Our Hometown Douglas AZ that has over 4000 members, for anyone with a connection to Douglas. We post about events, news items, memories, reunions, and there are many photos too.
Please don't be shy - I love hearing from my old friends...
