Jeanette's Story

I always wanted to be a Teacher, and my family and friends thought that was a great idea because I was always playing school with the neighborhood children. It was so much fun! I made the wrong decisions because at the time I was shy and didn't want to go in front of a class during the training phase. It was a mistake that lives with me to this day. However, as part of my job, I administer Career Scope Assessments to clients, so somehow a little part of that dream is fulfilled. My hero is Martin Luther King, Jr. because he taught me how silent and peaceful protest was the right way, and not violence. Rosa Parks comes second with such a brave example of peaceful protest with a touch of class. My Favorite Sports Teams are The New Jersey Devils and NY Yankees. My favorite people: My only child (a Son, and my parents). My relatives and friends are also my favorite people, of course. A Victorian Style home with a unique addition - a chapel for prayer and meditation - and a movie theater for family and friends would add a nice touch. That, of course, is a dream. The Story Wizard asks: "To be truly happy, you would be where, doing what, with whom?" The answer: I would be walking in a park with my grandfather (who passed away when I was 16 years old) and my grandmother (who passed away when I was one year old). To this day, I still miss my grandfather. I have beautiful memories of him walking my sister and me to St. Peter's Grammar School in downtown Jersey City from Montgomery Street (a long walk). He would always buy us Animal Crackers first thing in the morning; and on weekends, he would show up at the door with Italian Bread and other goodies. I recall he did not speak English, and when he visited and knocked on the door, we asked "Who is it?" He would respond by saying "who eesh ee" in the cutest voice. My grandfather was the grandest. I recall the sound of the glass bottles when the milkman brought the milk and chocolate milk to our door. He went up three flights of stairs and never complained. We lived at 465 Jersey Avenue at one time, and the doors downstairs were never locked. You never saw anyone who didn't belong there entering (unless visiting) or hanging out in the hallways. It ...Expand for more
was a very safe time. I presently live with my parents, and my sister and brother-in-law live downstairs (they own the two-family home). It is absolutely wonderful and peaceful. My favorite way to relax is with a cup of coffee while reading my favorite publication or newspaper, a walk in the park, or a good movie. The thing that would surprise everyone at my high school reunion would be that I have become quite conservative and matured quite a bit - well I hope so, I'm 59 years old! My first full-time job was at a company that paid me $68.00 Net while living quite comfortably. Imagine doing that now? The most memorable thought is how everyone in the company was so nice, and we had so much fun. The childhood memories that I will never forget is how wonderful my parents were, and of course, I will never forget my grandfather, who was such a huge presence in my life. We lived around Van Vorst Park in Jersey City during the 1950's when the bands would play at the Gazebo in the park. It was such a happy time, and although I was only a child, I enjoyed it very much. We lived right across the street. Everyone knew everyone, and there was always someone watching out for you. There are so many beautiful and precious memories. The life my parents gave me "is" a treasure. They were the best anyone could ask for. They were strict? Yes. Do I appreciate that? Absolutely Yes, and I will always be grateful for that. The teachers we had throughout the years were quite remarkable. I recall St. Peter's Grammar School, St. Bridgett's Grammar School, and Ferris High School (1965-1969) which was the first graduating class of the new school. All great schools! Ferris High School was very strict and like a private high school at the time. The teachers and guidance counselors must be commended for what they were to me, my older sister, and all the students. Kids were kids back then, and we are all able to share something beautiful that will live in our hearts and minds forever - the innocense, decency, and friendship we had like no other in this era. Ferris High School lasted only four years for most, but it gave us the memories of a lifetime. Thank you Ferris, and thank you Classmates, with lots of love.
