Kay's Story

After moving from Fort Bragg, N.C. to Fort Campbell, attended most of my junior year and all of my senior year at Clarksville High School in Tennessee graduating with the classmates of 1955. I lived at Fort Campbell Ky where my father was post veterinarian, living in the state of Kentucky, and totally enjoying the novelty of all of that. Living in this area was probably the most memorable for me with the exception of living in the Hawaiian Islands after WWII. The girls at Clarksville High School were very kind and friendly to me, such a stranger, and quite shy. The ones who continued to Austin Peay State College were even more dear to my memories. I finished my undergraduate studies at Austin Peay and my first teaching position was in Dallas, Tx, after taking the summer trip to Europe where my father was stationed at Den Haag, Netherlands. Since my paternal Grandmother had come from Sweden to America as an immigrant, through Ellis Island we drove up to NorKopping, Sweden to visit the house where she had lived. Her dream for coming to America was so that her children would receive a good education. Life was not easy here as she and my grandfather (from Illinois) homesteaded in Colorado. They had five offspring, three daughters and two sons. After teaching in Dallas, I relocated to Indianapolis for two years, teaching at a Special School where there were borderline handicapped children mixed with gifted students (different classes). When my husband finished his studies in Chiropractic we moved to Mississippi where he practiced. We...Expand for more
continued to relocate to gain opportunities for greater business with the growing family. We had three daughters and three sons. My husband changed his field and gained employment with Farm Bureau Insurance that took us to Hot Springs, Arkansas. While in Mississippi I was recruited to be in charge of a pilot program for Adult Education to help those on public assistance in two areas: personal hygiene and learning to read in order to become employable, I chose to teach the academics. This, to my advantage, opened the door for when we moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas, to teach and coordinate Adult Education classes which I truly enjoyed for 16 years. Moving to Fort Smith opened up the opportunity for me to teach at what was then Westark Community College (now UA Fort Smith) since I had earned my Master's degree in Adult Education when hours were required in Adult Education for continued certification and I chose to take the whole degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. During this time I enrolled in an H&R Block course in order to prepare family tax returns. The instructor had one office he was wanting to sell, and I chose to purchase it. After 14 years I chose to sell and retire. This was also a very rewarding time in my life as I could explain the returns to the taxpayers. My husband passed away in December 2009 after a battle with cancer and kidney failure. I now am blessed with my children, 14 grandchildren and two greats! Many more to come, I'm sure. Life is a journey. Love the Lord and He will take care of you.
