David P.'s Story

After graduating I quit Shagoury Const. Co. and joined the Navy in September. After graduating from Great Lakes I went to Norman, OK, then on to San Diego where I received orders to my first duty station. Patrol Squadron TWO at NAS Whidbey Island, WA. When my squadron deployed to Iwakuni Japan in Sept 1959 we stopped overnight on Guam where I ran into Bill Tomasello in the Baracks. My next tour was school in Jacksonvill, FL for six months then on to NAS North Island for two years. I was then returned to flight status with Patrol Squadron Seventeen again at Whidbey Island. This was August of 1965 and Vietnam was building up. We deployed again to Iwakuni and loaded up for a tour of duty in Vietnam, and on the way we were told to stop over and remain overnight in Cubi Point in the Philipines before going on, where at the Club that night I ran into Peter (Red) Maxon. (Have not seen him since). I got married to Helen in 1961, she married very young and had four children, but was totally dedicated t...Expand for more
o them. We then added three more for a total of seven. She died from cancer in1990 and ten years later I met Dorothy, another strong willed lady and we married in 2001. She had two children and eight Grandkids which I added to my already 22 Grand Kids and 15 Great Grand kids. It is said that before you leave this earth, you must leave a sign, so I think I have accomplished that!! I retired after 30 years in the Navy, and became a Field Service Rep with VSE Corp. out of Camarillo, CA . They had a contract with the Pacific Missile Test Center in Pt. Mugu, CA to do Air Launched Weapons Training on Attack Aircraft. A good job, but budget reduction closed that out and the Federal Register for PMTC was closed for hiring. So I went to school for a degree in Human Services and worked with the developmentally disabled for over two years till a couple of operations slowed me down and I retired again. Now Dottie and I have a motor home to tour this country that I helped defend for 35 yuears and we love it!!
