Judith's Story

I am Chairwoman of the Kansas Gold Star Family Committee. Families who have lost a loved one in combat are "Gold Star" families. At the present I am working with Legislatures to introduce a "stand alone" bill for a Gold Star Family license plate. Our Co-Chairwoman on the Committee is Toni Ortiz-Colon. Our Dads fought side by side in Vietnam and they both were killed in Vietnam. On September 10, 2009 there was a ceremony for my Dad at KU Army ROTC. He had been a ROTC Instructor at KU before his tour in Vietnam. The ceremony was AWESOME, it was done in front of the KU Cadet Battalion. Two former Commanders of my Dad in Vietnam flew in from both coast to honor him. Former Captain Lou Reymann flew in from Maryland and reitred Major General Kent Hillhouse fl...Expand for more
ew in from California. It was quite an emotional time for all of us. This was the first time I had ever met anyone that knew my Dad in Vietnam and it had been forty-one years before these two gentlemen had seen one another as well. Lawrence Journal World had done an article, WIBW was there as well. I made the promise to my Mom before she passed away last November that I would get "Gold Star Family" license plates for our Gold Star Families here in Kansas. I started in January '09 and by February I had been to the Capital and had a bill stricken. So, now Senator Dick Kelsey is going to introduce a "stand alone" bill the first of the year. We just ask for everyone to call you Representative and tell them that you support our Gold Star Family license plate.
