Phylis's Story

What's Up After All These Years? After High School Graduation, there were not many available options for me, even though I had always dreamed of going to college. My parents encouraged me to join the Air Force, which lasted for about 9 months because of a severly broken arm that was mangled during a winter tobaggon accident during high school. My husband went to Cambodia during the Viet Nam War. He did manage to live through the conflict, our marriage however didn't survive his post war behaviors, and it ended after five years. After remarrying, my husband and I put ourselves through college out west at The University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho. We had two childen while attending college, and moved back to Michigan with our small family in tow. We wanted to strengthen family ties here in Michigan. It was worth the move back, as my parents became the world's best grandparents. After five daughters were born, and the last one was in Kindergarten, I accepted a teaching position at Galesburg-Augusta Middle School where I have been teaching special education students for twenty years. In the past few years I have had an increasing number of autistic children and cognitively impaired students. Life continually changes. Now our five children are grown, several with families of their own. My husband is preparing for retirement in one year from Stryker Corporation where he works in the prototype lab. years. I am constantly amazed by what children are capable of withstanding and doing. I see so much that at times I like the oher animals better. Our own children are in a migration back to Michigan. Whereas a few years ago, only one of our adult children lived locally, three now do with their families. One daughter is an electrical engineer and lives in Ohio, one daughter is a Phyician, specializing in family medicine and troubled pregnancies. Our oldest daughter is also a special education teacher, at the high school level. Two daughters are currently finishing bachelor degrees in Nursing Science. With the current state of the economy, two have moved back in temporarily, and I enjoy the interaction. My husband and I focus on retirement planning, which includes building our dream house mostly ourselves in the Upper Peninsula on the St. Mary's River which connects Lake Huron with Lake Superior. I hope that my life has helped some people, made some people happier, and made a few lives easier. I also am dedicated to leaving some land in it's natural state for future generations to appreciate. I am a Master Gardener, which is how I try to make our spot beautiful and relaxing. After retirement, besides spoiling grand children, I am going to learn to restore a 1947 pickup truck and hopefully learn to work with stone, designing stone walls like those found in the plenty throughout the United Kingdom. Whereas some day I might become a good cook, it hasn't happened yet.
