Sandra Sue's Story

Hi there, Old Blue Jays! I'm told there are three things most people want to know about former classmates: l. Are you single, divorced, married? Yep, married, and happily for almost forty-one years (May 30). I married a man (Howard is his name) from Mississippi. He was residing in Hermitage, TN to attend UT, Nashville Extension. At the time Howard and I met, I was engaged to marry a "tall, dark and handsome" guy, a guy I was absolutely head-over-hills in love with (I thought). Howard was "just a good friend" who stuck close by me when my engagement to "handsome" became complicated and had to be put on hold. After two years of being just good friends, Howard and I recognized how much we had in common and that we didn't like the idea of each other dating others. Now, ain't that a story we've all heard before?? On Memorial Day, 1969, we were married at Joelton Baptist Church, which continues to be our place of worship and membership today. One slight change: the church is now First Baptist of Joelton, same location, new sanctuary. However, the sanctuary our wedding was held in still exists and we enter it often. By the way, you're invited to visit/attend church at FBC, Joelton anytime. Please look me up if/when you do. 2. Do you have children or pets that think they're your children? Yes, we have one child. His name is H. Christopher "Chris" Holland. He was ...Expand for more
a joy to us his entire childhood, youth years and has added much more joy to our family through his marriage to a precious young lady, Sara Beth McPherson. With them having two beautiful children, we now have Noah and Maggie, ages 10 and 6, the grandest of grandkids! Holland, party of six, feels so much happier than Holland, party of three! Know what I mean? 3. Do you work? No. I was an employee of Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools for 30 years, 25 of those 30 years were fulltime at Whites Creek Comprehensive High School. I loved the challenging work as purchasing agent, Curriculum Secretary and Secretary to Assistant Principals, but my most-loved "work" was with the students. Just before I reached retirement eligibility, I was placed in a position (library) where I had less student contact than ever before and was using less-than-ever of my favorite skills. Thus, I began counting the days until I could throw in the towel! Official retirement date came on May 26, 2007. May 26th is my husband's date of birth so I went home permanantly on that day as his birthday gift from me. He had been encouraging me to "get out of the school system" for several years so I decided that was the best gift I could give him. That answers the three most-asked questions and ends my story for now. Hope to chat with several of you later. Sue Massey Holland, Class of 1964
