Chris's Story

So lets see... it's been a few years since I signed up here and put this profile together. Gotta admit, it was pretty lame. Probably will still be pretty lame when I'm done since I'm not much of a writer. So yeah, last time I was here was purely for getting the 10 year highschool reunion going. Speaking of which, looks like we missed doing something for 15. :( Hope we do something for 20. So what's been going on... well, lots of stuff. The short story from graduation is as follows..... (cue some whimsical music now). Ok, graduated, whee! Did a lot of nothing special. Spent most of my time still hanging around HS friends working boring jobs for a couple years... then get a lucky break. My uncle quit his job at Data Tech's in Pawtucket and they needed someone who could do some 'computer work' in a pinch. They bring me on 'temporarily' to cover my uncles departure till they can find someone more qualified. Fast forward 3 years... I'm still there. :) Guess either A: noone more qualified showed up, or B: all that screwing around in the late hours at night in front of my computer while in HS actually paid off. I get a Job at St. Georges school as their network manager. A year goes by after that and I end up as a rather well paid consultant at Polaroid. (well, well paid for someone who's say 23 with no college). Things are fun, I spend most of my free time hanging out at the Meadowbrook Cinema or rebuilding my dad's basement into a movie theater of my own (with a real 35mm projector and all). Polaroid was fun, but the drive sucked. I then do some more contract work for a few different companies and eventually land a cool job at Akamai right in the middle of the dot-com boom in about 1999. That was a hell of a ride from 1999 - 2002. In those 3 short years I go from regular computer geek, to movie...Expand for more
theater mogul, traveling around the US & Europe and getting my pilots license to bankrupt and jobless at the end of the dot com boom in 2002. Wild ride, learned a lot... and barely escaped with the shirt on my back. By time the middle of 2002 comes by all is well again, gainfully employed, and having an OK, but not quite as flamboyant time. :) Working for Collective Tech on the Morgan Stanley contract a team of like 12 people are responsible for the running of somewhere around 50,000 unix/linux systems. Quite a cool gig, but we were bought by Accenture and the honeymoon from that was over by 2005. Most were laid off (including me)but with plenty of notice so we all prettymuch had new gigs right away. Since 05 I've been doing unix/linux administration for PFPC/PNC GIS in Westborough, MA. Not exactly my dream job but pays the bills. On a more personal side this year marked the year my life prettymuch changed again. Been dating this wonderful woman Allison for a few years now and had her and her two awesome kids move in this past summer. We added a room to my house (2 bedrooms just wouldn't cut it). We converted my garage (which hadn't seen a car in it in ages) into a new master bedroom and everyone moved in. Now we're planning on getting married in Jan 2010. Doing a cruise wedding. Getting married on the Carnival Liberty in Miami and then our family & friends are spending the 'weddingmoon' together for a week in the Carribean. Should be a blast. That's all for now... a little long winded on my short history but that's what's been happening in a nutshell. Wanna know more? Just ask. :) If you're still in RI or Eastern CT or MA maybe we can hook up for coffee, bite to eat, etc. For those that are wondering I still have the 'movie theater' in my basement of my house like I did at my dad's. :)
