Afton's Story
Life
After 9 years in WI, spring of 2006 found us on the move again. When we settled near Madison I thought, mistakenly it would seem, that we finally had roots. 20 years as a Marine wife and 14 moves was quite enough for me, thank you very much. My husband received word that his job was disappearing in 10 months, so he started the old job search once again. We never imagined that search would last a mere 24 hours. The only hitch was that we would have to relocate still again. The weekend before Labor Day my husband loaded up a vehicle and headed east to start his new job and begin the search for a house. Our older son assisted me in packing up our household. A mere 25,000 pounds later and we were on our way east!
We are now settled in Fredericksburg, VA. Or, if you want to be more specific, Massaponax. My husband enjoys his job here more than he did working in WI; he's working with Marines again as a consultant for a private company that does subcontract work for the government. Though traffic in the D.C. area is notoriously horrendous, he only has a 15 mile commute. I got a job working for SuperTarget until something better c...Expand for more
rosses my path. Our older son moved with us, hoping to find a better job than he had and succeeded (though it's still not quite what he wants). He'd still like to get something suited for a college math major. And my beautiful Norwegian Forest Cat is having a ball running the entire cat-proofed house. We live in a new house in a new neighborhood and have been blessed with an active and friendly bunch of neighbors. In fact, our street is the envy of the rest of the development because of all the activities and get-togethers we have.
Our younger son graduated from the Naval Academy in 2001 and has been in Pensacola, FL doing flight training since. He's due to get his helicopter wings in Feb. 2007. Though helicopters weren't his first choice, he loves it. He's getting married in June 2007 to a terrific young lady who's working on her Master's degree.
On a sad note, Dec. 2006 saw the passing of my dad. He was a kind and gentle man who never had anything bad to say about anyone. Ever. He went suddenly, but peacefully and without pain, with my mom and brothers in attendance. We miss him and his wit, humor, and quiet way tremendously.
