Al's Story
After high school I took up employment as a letter carrier in Sarnia. It was a good job but I grew bored with it and decided to take off for a bit. So I strapped on my backpack and worked out my thumb and headed out to explore Canada. I ended up in Baff (yes I know so clichÃÂé). When I returned home to Sarnia I took up a number of jobs, mostly of the shipping and receiving kind, and then with the help of my oldest brother had the good fortune to be hired on at Dow Chemical, eventually working my way out of the labour pool and into a nice cushy process operatorâÃÂÃÂs job. In the meantime I met the âÃÂÃÂlove of my lifeâÃÂàand was married in May of 1977. But by the time I was 25 I was getting bored with that job too (just no satisfying some people). I started attending university part time and eventually gave up my job and my wife and I moved to Guelph so I could attend the University of Guelph fulltime. In my second semester there we had our first child, a boy by the name of Adam. I graduated with a BA in psychology and was still uncertain as to what I wanted to do when I grew up so I decided to do more schooling and completed my M.Sc. in Adult Education in 1986. During this time our second child was born, a girl by the name of Megan. I then began teaching at Guelph as a contract instructor and then in 1989 took the plunge and entered a doctoral program in adult education and community development at the University of Toronto while I worked fulltime a...Expand for more
t Guelph. I finished my doctorate and was hired into a tenure stream position where I currently work in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, University of Guelph, and the rest, as they say, is history. I confess I love my job and I am currently (2010) on sabbatical and enjoying the luxury of having the time to do uninterrupted research and writing.
In 2000 my first grandchild (and only grandchild to date) was born and I fell in love all over again. It was also the year that the Âlove of my life and I decided that perhaps we were not each otherÂ's respective Âlove of our lives and so after 24 years parted ways on good terms. These days I live in Ingersoll, Ontario a relatively small, sleepy town in Oxford County just a stoneÂs throw away from London and I commute to Guelph. My adult daughter lives with me while my son and granddaughter live on the other side of town. I am enjoying life most days and I am often awed by where we end up in life (this journey was not part of my plan). In my spare time I enjoy the gym, pick at my guitar (and for those of you who may remember my guitar playing from my teen years, no I have not really improved), and enjoy photography and creative writing. And yes I am still trying to figure out what I will do when I grow up. One of these days I will get it figured out, but in the meantime....
If you remember me from high school and would like to drop me a note, please feel free to do so; it would be most welcome.
