Life
After promoting punk rock bands (I was ahead of my time - punk bands people hated then - and now your kids listen to - can you picture them groovin to Boston, Foreigner - yikes!) around Vancouver in my 20s, finally wised up and went back to school at 29. After two years at Langara, I graduated in journalism (any lunkhead from Killarney could have passed Langara with a bit of effort) and headed to Asia in 1994. I have been here ever since. I worked at the South China Morning Post newspaper in Hong Kong for 6.5 years as a reporter and was then editor of a golf magazine for two years. Between 2002 and late 2007 I was in the crazy city of Shanghai where I worked as a sub-editor (foreign experts they call us here - the key word "foreign") on the Shanghai Daily newspaper. Still write loads of golf here - China a fascinating place - but overcrowded, too polluted, too much spitting -- and beware, they are coming to Vancouver to buy and mow down your East Van childhood home. The Cantonese in Vancouver soon a footnote in history - Mandarin wave taking over.
After working in Beijing for a year for a news service during the Olympic year - I got married and moved back to Vancouver after a six-month honeymoon through Asia. Life back home proved a difficult adjustment and the marriage didn't work out - but no worries - it was great to be back around my aging par...Expand for more
ents, now out in Ladner where my sister Marion lives with her husband and child.
Do I miss living in East Vancouver? Joe Jackson sang it best "gorillas walking down my street." Not exactly a center for culture - but a relatively safe, quiet part of the city to grow up in the 1970s. Hello to anyone who I liked, had a laugh with and was nice to me in return. Your kindness was appreciated.
From 2014 to 2017 I was living in Abu Dhabi working at a newspaper - it was scorching there with ISIS and the Taliban all around, albeit about 1,000km from the UAE. Delusional people to avoid with a mindset circa 2BC. Dubai - a city worth a visit - was just up the road so played a lot of golf there and around that giant sandbox.
I got married again in late 2016 and moved back to Shanghai the following spring to set up house. In June 2017 we welcomed our one and only child, a beautiful daughter, and I have been helping to take care of her while my wife works full-time. She gets a flat with her job so I am a kept man. Lot of respect for mothers as raising kids is a full-time job and not an easy one I have found - work was easier in comparison. Imagine raising half the yahoos we went to school with? Respect to Killarney mothers.
Hope everyone is well and in good health. One day I will come home? East Van is safe these days. It used to be tough, now it's just expensive.
