Alan's Story

Alan Cleaves Life After Junipero Memorial High School After graduating from JMHS in 1964, I attended Monterey Peninsula College for 2 years and was on the Cross Country Team. While at MPC, I worked part time as a college painter for around a year and then took a part time job as a teller at Monterey Savings. During my 2 years at MPC, I met my future wife Sandra Kizer and the Monterey Savings job turned full time as a Manager trainee for their soon to open Salinas branch. In 1966, the Military Draft and The Vietnam War was in full swing and I like many others, received my Draft Notice. On January 17, 1967 I enlisted for 3 years in the US Army stipulating that I would receive finance career training. During the several months, I attended 3 special training schools and ended up stationed at Ft Benning, GA as a financial pay clerk. I was part of a 9 person team that received, counted and paid out over $1 million dollars in cash to Army personnel on a monthly based. While stationed at Ft Benning, I flew back to Monterey, married Sandra and drove us back to Georgia for a new life. That lasted for about 6 months as I was transferred to Salzburg, Germany to work for the Major General of the 24th Infantry Division. Sandra flew to Sacramento, CA; lived with her parents, working as an accountant while waiting to join me in Germany. Germany was short lived as President Johnson moved 2/3rd of the 24th Infantry Division to Ft Riley, Kansas. Thinking I would be at Ft Riley (General Custer’s Fort) for a while, Sandra joined me and we purchased a 40 foot mobile home and settled in. Over the next 12 months, I spent 3 months in Kansas, 3 months in Germany when Russia invaded Czechoslovakia and then 6 months in Viet Nam. Sandra returned to Sacramento when I went to Viet Nam and picked up her old job. In January 1969, I left the Army and headed to Sacramento to start life again. In 1969, I was hired by Sacramento Saving and Loan to be the Branch Manager of their soon to be opened Davis Branch. In 1970 and 1972 Sandra and I had 2 daughters, Sheri and Debra. I worked for Sacramento Saving for 5 years managing 5 branches; 2 that I opened and 3 existing branches including their largest branch. I had built a reputation as a strict but fair manager along with being a trouble shooter for projects and branc...Expand for more
hes. In 1974, I was hired away by Citizens Saving and Loan based out of San Francisco to be their Branch Manager of the Freeport office. A year later I opened their downtown “J street” branch. Another year later, I was transferred to manage the Home Office in San Francisco. My wife and I along with our 2 daughters plus the dog, moved to Walnut Creek, CA (East of SF). I worked for Citizens for 29 years holding many positions of responsibility including Regional VP of Branches, Sales/Marketing Manager, Project Manager, Consumer Lending Manager, First VP of the Mid-Atlantic States (responsible for all branches in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey). Citizens had several owners ranging from U.S. Steel to Ford Motor Company, private citizens to Citi Bank and changed its name from Citizens to 1st Nationwide to Cal Fed and finally to Citi Bank (out of NY). Sandra and I divorced in 1984 and I re-married in 1989 to Emily Greene who had 2 children Ellen and Stephen. Emily worked for Citizens as the Policy/Procedure Manager and then moved over to Well Fargo as a Sr. Project Management Manager. We lived in Concord, CA (East of SF) for 8 years and then moved to Sacramento for 10 Years. After retiring from Citi Bank, I went to work for Golden 1 Credit Union (largest in CA & 2nd largest in US) as the startup Manager for their new Sales and Service Team. Once the Team was up and running, the new process was running smoothly (5 years), I retired and we moved to Dallas, Oregon. Emily worked out of the house a few more years and then she retired from Wells Fargo. Since we were retired, we bought a 40 foot Allegro Bus Motorhome with 4 slide outs and traveled America. We have been across the US 3 times and have enjoyed this beautiful country. We took a couple of RV trips with some of our grandkids along with a few curses with friends and vacations to Cancun. My Dad passed away in 2012 and we purchased the house from the estate. In 2013, we did a major re-model and now spend out winters in Monterey and summers in Dallas, Oregon. Our 4 children are all married and we have 7 grandkids ranging from 6 to 15. Everyone lives in California which is another reason the Monterey house is nice to have. We are very lucky as everyone is healthy, doing fine and smiling while enjoying retirement.
