Alan's Story
Life
Freitag is a professor with UNC Charlotte, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in public relations, and has held this position since August 1998.
He earned an Assoc. degree in TV production from the Milwaukee Technical College (1971); a BS in radio/TV/film from the Univ. of Wis.-Oshkosh (1973); an MA in business admin. and public admin. from Webster Univ., St. Louis, (1977); and a Ph.D. in mass communication from Ohio Univ.(1999). Freitag is an accredited memer of the Public Relations Society of America and was inducted into PRSA's College of Fellows in November 2006.
Freitag retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1995 as a lieutenant colonel after 22 years' service, including 10 in Europe and two in Hawaii. He served as a C-130 navigator, then entered public affairs: in advertising and publicity for Air Force recruiting; on the operations staff of the American Forces Network - Europe; as director of public affairs for a U.S. base in England; with AF congressional liaison and as director of media relations for the Strategic Defense Initiative Organ...Expand for more
ization at the Pentagon; as director of media relations and press aide to NATO's military commander; and as assistant director of public affairs for the Air Force's Pacific command.
Military duties included public affairs involvement in the return of U.S. hostages from Iran in 1981, the raid on Libyan terrorist facilities in 1986, and the invasion of Panama in 1989. During 1990-93 with NATO, Freitag was closely involved with Alliance media activities surrounding the reunification of Germany, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, the CFE Treaty, the opening of NATO to Eastern Europe, the Russian coup, and NATO's role in the Gulf War.
His work has been published in Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Public Relations Research, Public Relations Review, Journal of Communication Management, Public Relations Quarterly, Newspaper Research Journal, and Asia-Pacific Defense Forum.
Freitag has been married to the former Robin Heskett of Kansas City, MO, since 1979. They have one daughter, Katie, 21, whom they adopted in November 1998.
