After Conestoga, I took a four year Navy scholarship in exchange for four years of service after graduation. I did well academically in engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and was assigned by the Navy to work for ADM Rickover. ADM Rickover was the driving force behind use of nuclear propulsion in naval ships. After reporting to Washington, I was sent to a graduate school in Pittsburgh to learn some specifics for nuclear engineering. Later in Washington, I finished a masters degree in solid mechanics and materials engineering. I married in 1983. While I was living on the upstairs floor of a row house on capitol hill my first floor neighbor was Anita Hill, a clerk for Clarence Thomas (supreme court justice), Anita Hill was the female part of his supreme court confirmation scandal. I have three daughters. My eldest is a second year student at the University of Virginia Medical School.
