Alan's Story
What I have been doing since 1961:
Family:
⢠Married 1971 to Linda Parker Nelson, our son Adam lives with his wife Kristen and their daughters Livvy and Addie in Olney Md. Adam is a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College and Manager Government Affairs for Express-Scripts Washington DC.
⢠During our 40 years of marriage our family has lived in Yonkers and Northport NY, Hackensack NJ, Atlanta GA, and Montgomery Village MD.
Education:
⢠Westchester Community College (1964) A.A.S. Electrical Technology
⢠Manhattan College magna cum laude (1975) B.S. Radiological and Health Sciences
Employment:
⢠Director Emergency Preparedness for the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), located in Washington, DC. NEI develops policy on key legislative and regulatory issues affecting the industry and serves as a unified industry voice before the U.S. Congress, Executive Branch agencies, and federal regulators, as well as international organizations.
⢠Worked for more than 43 years in the nuclear industry developing and implementing programs:
o Mount Sinai Hospital, Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, New York Power Authority, Long Island Lighting Company, and Consolidate...Expand for more
d Edison Company.
o Since 9/11 focus has been primarily on emergency preparedness and security related issues. Major accomplishments include: Nuclear Regulatory Commission endorsement of power plant operating and security emergency action response levels; protective action recommendations for plant operators and the public; national award winning publication âÂÂProtecting Our Neighbors in the Event of an Emergency;â development of industry emergency preparedness response training programs; and Emergency Preparedness/Security hostile event exercises guidelines.
o Harvard School of Public Health Guest Lecture-Radiological Emergency Planning: Terrorism, Security, and Communication.
o Additional involvement in the nuclear industry included: license renewal application process, used nuclear fuel dry cask storage, and power plant decommissioning.
Retirement:
Since retiring from the Nuclear Energy Institute, August 2009 and Linda as a medical assistant we have been enjoying our grandchildren, and traveling. Recently we have purchased property in New Bern NC and hope to transition over the next few years. In addition to traveling interest include playing golf, photography, and gardening.
