Alan's Story
Life-
For a person who gave his teachers so much grief, it was ironic that that I should choose teaching as my profession.
All through school, my teachers made it look easy. But, it was Mr. Stull at Boude Storey that made me decide to teach 8th grade science.
His General Science 8 class involved copying lengthy passages as he read from his notes, or watching one of his makeshift demonstrations which usually ended with sparks flying, goop spilling, plants wilting, or someone being shocked. He was a Julius Sumner Miller with brain rot. So it seemed.
I knew I could do better. As it turned out my first teaching assignment in Dallas was to replace Mr. Stull who had been transferred to TW Browne Jr. High. Truth is, the first year I was worse.
It took a few years and lots of 'flops' before I finally received some fancy award for teaching. As President Bush would say, "it's hard work... it's really, really hard work".
Over the years I've had many odd jobs and a second real profession...Expand for more
. They include: janitor in a potato chip factory, assistant manager at Piggly Wiggly, bus boy at the Hi-Dee-Ho in Lubbock, and Nature/Ecology director at a Boy Scout Ranch in West Texas.
For a few years, I left teaching to work in the oilfields of East Texas. But, for the past two decades or so, I've been back in the classroom and doing what I love. Currently I am assigned to teach 8th grade. What a hoot!
