Alan's Story

Life I have been in Tucson for ten years. I am the pastor of New Spirit Lutheran Church, on the east side of town. Tucson is a great place to be right now. Life is great. I work way too much, golf way too little. Try to keep ahead of the aging thing, but that's a challenge in itself, isn't it? My greatest joy in life is life itself. I love to cook, I love good strong coffee, I'm a bit of a gym rat, trying to keep as fit as I can; my dogs are great companions; and the friends I have made over the years are amazing. I would love to reconnect with school friends I've lost touch with. I'm still pretty quiet, something most of you knew from school...yet, I bring a sense of calm and peace to difficult situations. I lived in Payson for ten years, as the pastor of Mount Cross Lutheran Church, but I also served as the community Hospic...Expand for more
e chaplain. The nurses called me the "peace-bringer", as I was able to calm strained hearts and fearful souls of the dying and their loved ones. It was an amazing honor for me to share the journey with patients and families. That's still a big part of what I do now. Sure, I preach but I am more interested in helping people sort things out in their lives. I'm quite liberal in my practice and faith; oh and politics, too. And I feel pretty good in that skin. I have lived in lots of places. My journey has taken me from Oklahoma to Florida to Virginia and Southern California....back to South Carolina to Northern California...but "home" to me is Arizona; and home will always be Scottsdale, and you who over those long years ago, became extended family of sorts. It is good to be home. It will be good to see you, again. Alan "Whitey" Field

Had the honor to be invited to celebrate the wedding of Tim Halvorson and Lisa Wahl tonight. Tim was in my youth group in the mid-1970's at Bethany Lutheran in Scottsdale. It was a warm gathering of close friends and wor

Awaiting Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, Conrad, and Bishop Claire Burkat driving them to the airport. This is Phoenix at 2:00 pm. Balmy!
Thirty-eight years ago God called me onto an amazing journey, both difficult beyond imagination and joyous as living out love and life. This journey continues even today.
Anna Louise Englund. Jill Doherty. Look who Deborah Hutterer and I had dinner with!
With Deborah Hutterer....Mardi Gras greetings in COVID isolation. Shared good food, and conversation with Evelyn Spiess; whispered the Lord’s Prayer, and now to you; may you have a blessed Lenten season! Missed King Cake w
Desert sunset without clouds. Great day with JerryandEve, and brother, Jerry Spiess. Good food, puzzle impossibilities, and dessert! What could be better?!?!
I love Arizona sunsets. We got close to 80 degrees today! Lovely.
Just about says it all doesn't it....I love Fitz!!!
If there was ever a "singing prophet" who could stand his ground, smiling up a storm, telling you what's messed up in this world and how to fix it...it is Pete. I would love to see his work/words canonized for the 20th and
Check another off the bucket-list. Trying my hand at welding. This could be addicting...too many interests, so little time. Maybe, if I ever retire......
The Sermon on the Mount has been challenging to some over the past three weeks in worship....saw this photo and am trying to understand "alt Jesus." Not workin' for me. And you???
From our local political cartoonist, Fitzsimmons. Kinda makes sense when there's hemming and hawing when asked specific questions about care of the poor, elderly, and children. What have we become?
Preparing...as the darkness wraps itself around this day...to follow to Jesus to his death. Silence. Darkness. Mercy.
On May 23, 2019 Deborah Hutterer and I were married at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center, in Carefree, AZ. It was a magical evening spent with an intimate group of family and dear friends. On May 26th, we celebrated ou
Our attention has been hijacked by the ridiculous, the trite, and the dangerous. The danger lies in the fact that real, environmental crises loom on the horizon. When "its too late" it will be too late. There will be no go
Okay, I need to clarify my earlier post. The 2nd Commandment is not about the right to arm bears. It says "You shall not use the Name of the Lord in vain." That last word "vain" is really vanity. The commandment update
How often is "fear" used as a political tactic. Maybe you remember these. When the attention was turned toward the White House of W, within hours the "threat level" was increased to orange or red. Remember? Be very afr
The best treasure Tucson has to offer, Fitzsimmons! Meditate on this, and its reality.
