Alana's Story

Life I live in Austin, TX with my husband, Bill, who is nurse at Travis County Jail, one kitty, Missy(mother-in-law's dog) just came to live with us, and flocks of birds including wrens and cardinals that sing us awake in the morn. I work at the Austin Public Library I also volunteer for the neighborhood association and for civic, environmental and political organizations. I try to go to movies once a week or at least check out some videos. I write (several poems have been published), and spend as much time as possible in the parks. Though I haven't seen any UFOs or Angels in the Austin skies, I've seen many new buildings alter the horizon. My son and his girlfriend meet us for lunch at least weekly. I love to go junking at garage sales and at the Salvation Army and Goodwill stores. I still love to read. Currently I am on a nature kick, and have purchased and borrowed books on Texas flowers, insects and true adventure stories. Last year it was Science Fiction and Fantasy books; who knows what's next? College I moved to Kingsville the September after graduating from high school. What a marvelous experience! My friends there included some of my high school friends (Angie Pierce, Porter Rutherford, Robert Hammons, Carol Guynn) and I met many other fine people. My first cousin and I ran into each other after not seeing each other since the ages of 8 and 9. My first room mate was Viviana from Robstown; Viviana had a pair of shoes for every outfit she had at school, and claimed to have about 200 other pairs of shoes at h...Expand for more
ome. I moved off campus so I could stay up all night and go to classes during the day. I wish my energy level was that good now! I met people in the theatre department and volunteered there a bit, but the most fun time I had was my Sunday afternoon a radio show on the college radio station, KTAI, and many of the boys (yeah, I know, not politically correct: but they were boys and not men) teased me because I played female musicians and folky music (and Beatles) while most of them played heavy metal and rock and roll music. I had a great time listening to new music that wasn't available anywhere else. I met people who were spelunkers (cavers) and rapelled off the top of the A&I stadium. You see, there was this boy... Anyway, I left school before I graduated. Then in 1992 I decided to complete my degree. I commuted from Austin to San Marcos after work a couple of days a week to attend SWT (TSU). I finally earned a BA in Geography/Psycholgy with a concentration in Urban Planning in 1997. It took a long time, but I'd earned 172 hours by the time I finished school. (Whew! That was tiring.) The only extra curricular activity I did while at SWT was volunteerr tomonitor the headwaters of the San Marcos River to keep stats on the Water Quality. I used the degree when we were working on our city mandated neighborhood plan.
