Alann's Story

Life Most of my time is spent on an educational project (EarthKAM) designed for middle school students. The project is headed by former astronaut, Dr. Sally Ride. EarthKAM makes it possible for middle school students to use the Internet to take pictures of the Earth with a digital camera we have in the International Space Station. The process and pictures are used in classrooms to teach young scientists about the Earth, Space and orbital mechanics. I'm also a co-founder of Sally Ride Science. A company dedicated to the production of various educational science materials including books, Science Camps, the TOYChallenge contest, and Science Festivals for middle school girls. These science festivals are typically held at university campuses across the country. In my copious spare time, I bike, peak-bag, orienteer and do lots of running. This year (2007) I've had several PRs at various distances, but the one I'm most proud of is a 3:16:38 in the marathon. This time qualifies me to run the Boston marathon in April of 2008. ---------------------- It’s been about 15 years since I updated my profile. Well, life has been decent although certainly not void of sad moments. Especially the death of my parents and of Dr. Sally Ride at such a young age. It’s wonderful that our government has honored Sally with a coin, a stamp and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was a remarkable human being and an inspiration to us all. Fortunately, my health continues to be good, and I’ve managed to enjoy little adventures that have yielded much happiness. Summiting Colorado’s 5 tallest peaks and running the Grand Canyon (R2R2R) from north rim to south rim and then back to the north rim a couple of times in my late 50s were memorable events. As was summiting Death Valley's Telescope Peak (elevation 11,043 feet) from Badwater (282 feet below sea level), also a couple of times. Finally, at age 60 I was fortunate to complete a 126-mile ultra marathon. U...Expand for more
nfortunately, these days, the old bag-of-bones is finding these types of challenges a bit too difficult. Another memorable experience was crewing for my friend ultra runner Harvey Lewis in 2018 as he tried to set the FKT on the Appalachian Trail. A documentary movie of his adventure called “Like Harvey Like Son” recently became available on Amazon Prime Video. It’s a wonderful story and well worth viewing. In 2019, after working at UCSD for over 30 years, I retired. I intended to finally travel, but the universe had other priorities. I was about to cross from India to Nepal in March of 2020 when the borders closed, and I had to leave India unexpectedly. And if that wasn’t bad enough, as I was about to board my flight, authorities found my Garmin InReach in my carry-on daypack. It turned out that device had become illegal in India in December of 2019. I was detained, had my passport and InReach confiscated and was not allowed to leave the country until I appeared in court before a judge. I immediately hired a lawyer and he managed to arrange my court appearance a few hours before the New Delhi courts completely shut down due to covid. Once I had my passport, I luckily got a flight (nearly the last out of Delhi) to Singapore and from there, one back to the US. It was a challenging, expensive experience, but it was accompanied by much compassion and kindness from the wonderful people of that exotic beautiful land of wonders and extremes. I truly hope a return to India is still in my future. Feel very fortunate to live in San Diego (since 1980) with its excellent weather and quality of life, even if it has become quite expensive (recently ranked most expensive city in the country), and to still be healthy enough to enjoy the beautiful natural wonderland of this region. Yesterday’s (12/03/2023) little adventure was an 11-mile trek with 3,700 feet of elevation gain to a local peak with near perfect weather conditions. Life is not bad!
