Albert's Story

After graduation I went to work full time at Rainbow Paint and Body shop on Watkins St. near A St. where the new Lucky Market now stands. It burned to the grown in the spring of 1949. I was doing my shop clean up one Saturday Morning when I heard a deafening roar and felt a blast of heat coming through the galvanized metal walls of the shop. A fire started next door in the Hayward Feed and Fuel storage, the firemen said it was caused by internal combustion from alfalfa bales that had been stacked with improper ventilation. I was a motor head, that's all I wanted to do was work on cars. While the new shop was being constructed at 387 A St. I took a trip to Italy to meet all of my relatives that I had only known through letters and photos, when I returned From Italy I was offered a job at an Appliance store in Oakland at $350.00 a month plus commission, clearly an offer I couldn't refuse. I enjoyed selling appliances, after a few years I rose to the position of manager. I was then hired by a large furniture and appliance store on Mission Blvd. in Hayward, (Wisemans Furniture) near Hard...Expand for more
er Rd. After 18 years I bought that business and kept it for another ten years until the property was sold. I then opened a much smaller furniture store in Downtown Pleasanton, I kept it for ten years until my retirement in 1994. I then constructed rental units on our property and have been managing them for the last twenty years, they were built on the same property that my family purchased in 1943 when we move from Oakland to Castro Valley. In 1955 I Married a wonderful girl named Mary Lopez from Decoto, she was a graduate of Washington HI. in Centerville. we have three children and seven grandchildren. We had a wonderful 58 year marriage, with deep sadness she left us in December of 2013. I still live in the home that we built in 1960. I went from thinking I was going to be a farmer, (I loved F.F.A), to auto repairing, I finally found my forty five year career in retail Home Furnishings, I now do a little volunteer work in the community, I guess there is still a little bit of farmer in me so I grow vegetables and take care of my puppy Laila.
