Albert's Story

Life Blah! Blah! Blah! I can't believe that anyone I knew in high school would even be curious about how I am doing. OK. I'm fine. How are you? Well, now that we have that awkward bit out of the way, let me just say that life is interesting. It amazes me that after all these years, I still love teaching, I still love research. I spend my days with mostly 18-19 year olds, being incredibly smart and stupid at the same time. But as someone who is really not in any hurry to be a grown up, it works. School I would say that a few things dominate my memory of high school: 1) My parents told me that I could have skipped TWO grades and they said no both times! I'm still angry about that. 2) I realize that it was made much more bearable by the fact that I was able to sneak off campus and was therefore in the building less than half of the time I was supposed to be warehoused there. 3) I am still angry/sad about those ...Expand for more
who died too young. 4) That the only teacher I had in K-12 who was any sort of a role model was my 5th grade teacher. Most of the teachers were either barely competent, just doing the minimum required to get their check or resigned to having their hands tied by others who didn't want to get shown up. I am grateful for the few teachers who realized that it was a waste of both of our time to make me sit in a class I didn't want to be in, and gave me a productive way out. Workplace I don't want to write anything here, but I just thought I should say that anyone who would use the phrase "career arc" should be hunted down and flogged. <- Wrote that 10 years ago. Still love it! I would add that my life is a study in opportunity costs: My job is exhausting, physically and mentally, and I wake up every morning happy to be going there. I get to share the things I am passionate about with impressionable minds. Mwa ha ha.
