Aletha-Ann Alohilani's Story
Parkinson’s Diseases
To be diagnosed with this disease the doctor told us that my husband was one of the youngest patient he ever known to have Parkinson’s , which had an advantage, because he was healthy, and very active, being a firefighter, marathon runner, canoe paddler & truck driver on his days off help him control and maintain his disease, and years of working with his meds to see what work better at certain time of day. He would double up on them or even took 1/2 in between to make it work. It took him years to figure that out and only he could do it, and only he knew what works to keep his uncontrollably shakes to bare minimum. Keeping busy was his way. We lived in kalihi and he worked on Kaheka st he ran to work on his days on, after dropping the girls at McKinley I would drop his bag off,at the station, that’s how we did things on his off days from the department he was a CDL driver for Hawaii Transfer for 15 years that was our normal. Parkinson’s is incurable you just have to make the best of it, don’t give up, get up and exercise and live life to its fullest
I’m not sure what year he was diagn...Expand for more
osed but it took us by surprised, and pretty sure he was promoted to Captain while he had Parkinson’s and as long as he passed his physical and did his job within the department I remembered he waited til his 25 anniversary with the department before he told them he had Parkinson’s. He worked another 4 years after that.. He worked at one of the busiest fire station on Oahu Station 2 Pawaa and was Captain on both the Engine 2 & Ladder 2, not sure if he ever Captain the Rescue truck, he did Captain for his friends at different station on his days off sometimes. All his men’s are all Captain now. I heard there wasn’t a dried eye at his Station when he told them he had Parkinson’s and that he was retiring at age 51.
. Fighting fires & saving lives was his passion and his legacy. Fighting his demon everyday was his norm.. The struggle was real. Parkinson’s will always be part of our lives my daughters and I, we lived it everyday with Tom, their dad, even the grandkids knew when to step in to help their Papa.
I wear his tattoo, to honor him, my husband, “MY THOMAS “ he was my life ,my everything.,My Hero❤️❤️❤️
