Alfredo's Story
The birth of our second granddaughter last week occasions this participation in the BCC profile. To recap: I went to MIT, got my BS and started a PhD in neuroscience. I went to Einstein and finished the PhD along with an MD. Then I married Debra, who went to BCC as well (though I only met her in Boston). Following a post-doc at Caltech, an internship and then a residency in Ophthalmology at Harvard, I did a fellowship and became an academic neuro-ophthalmologist. About then, I began my family and now have: Rebecca, married to David and living in Durham, NC. They gave us our first granddaughter. Elvio, with Meryl who live near us in Southern California. Benjamin who married Taylor and they too are in LA.

continue to work: I'm on the faculty of UCLA, see patients in neuro-ophthalmology, and run a couple of labs in the areas of mitochondrial medicine. I also administer the faculty at Doheny, a prominent eye institute associated with UCLA. But I love teaching (medical students, residents and fellows) and research the most.
Best of all, I come home to Debra, my wife of 43 years, and my companion of over 50, and we bike and play tennis together. Although Debra only spent 1 year at BCC, and I was there 3 years, at the 10th year reunion, it was apparent that she left a greater impression than I.
I wonder how my classmates are doing and if any of them wonder as well, I feel very fortunate about how things worked out.
