Alice's Story
Life
It's hard to believe that it's been 23 years since grauduating from college! I married right after graduation, and moved so much in the following 4 years that I lost track of every single one of my friends. In 1988, I moved to Jackson, Wyoming, divorced, and have been here ever since. It's an awesome place to live...right under the Grand Tetons and about 1 hour from Yellowstone. Mountain, rural town, small, rugged. I love it.
I have 2 beautiful daughters...one is 12 and the other 21. I also have a 19 year old step-daughter. After many years of being a single mother, I am now engaged to a wonderful man. I am absolutely loving being in my forties. I feel like I have finally truly become myself...I am no longer the extremely shy, quiet person I used to be. What fun!
I manage a hotel/motel supply business...as you can imagine, it keeps me extremely busy working in a resort town. I have been doing this for the last 8 years. Completely different career than I had in mind! My absolute favorite jobs have been in the social services sector.
I still play softball, although my reflexes aren't anywhere near what they used to be when I was in my 20's. (Darn it!) I discovered golf about 5 years ago and have developed a serious passion and addiction for it. I also bowl competitively (what else are you going to do during the long winters when skiing is so expensive?) I travel around the state for tournaments, having a lot of fun and even winning some money. A couple of years ago, I set the Wyoming State record for high series for a woman. That was pretty awesome!
It still has not been broken.
I wish there were more hours in the day, because there are so many things I want to do, and things I want to learn. Which passion do I want to focus on the most? I would love to hear from any of my old friends. Like I said, I lost track of everyone and would love to catch up.
School
I thought high school was great, except I wouldn't ever want to go through all those hormone changes and mood swings again! I played softball & volleyball, hung out with the basketball players. The only thing that was rotten was that we moved right before my senior year. I've never truly ...Expand for more
forgiven my parents for that. I feel like I missed out on a lot by moving, and most important of all, the continuity of all my friends. My parents wouldn't let me call or go visit much during my senior year, so I lost track of everybody. I don't even know which colleges my friends all ended up at. So parents, if at all possible, do not do this to your kids. And if it's unavoidable, let your kids have contact with their friends.
My new school was okay, and I met lots of nice people, but didn't have much time to bond with anyone before we all left for college. And my heart was always back in Chula Vista.
Workplace
My first job after college was working for a helicopter courier service in the San Francisco Bay Area. We'd spend all day hopping all over the bay, picking up processed checks from the bank and taking them to the airport. It was a lot of fun. There is no view like there is from a helicopter!
My next major job was teaching developmentally disabled adults how to live and work on their own. I started at entry level and rapidly worked my way up to 2nd in command, while still maintaining a case load of 27 clients. Talk about rewarding though! I absolutely loved it. The only reason I left was because when I gave birth to my second daughter, I felt it was really important to be able to stay home with her for a couple of years. We moved to a different town where the cost of living was much lower so we could afford for me to do that. After a couple of years, I started working for the school district in the special services department, working with developmentally disabled children from kindergarten to high school. I did anything from tutoring and mentoring to job coaching. Again, it was another job I loved. But with my marriage crumbling, I moved back to Jackson to be close to my support system (sister and friends).
After a brief stint working for a real estate company, I started working for a hotel/motel supply business. I worked for them for 6 years until I was recruited by a rival company to expand their janitorial supply aspect of their business and open up a wholesale store for them. I've now been here for 1 1/2 years and work for some amazing people.
