Alicia's Story

Life Hello Everybody! After graduation I attended Modesto Jr. College where I studied accounting but then changed my mind. I then decided I wanted to become a police officer, but again, I changed my mind. I didn't like that school so I moved back home where I got a job at the hospital doing billing. I met John, my husband, at my sister's wedding, but he was in the Marines so I didn't see him again for a couple of years when he was discharged. We dated for 3 years before we were married in 1995. In May, 1996 we had Ciara, I had her with us at the reunion. Hunter was born in 1998 and Tommy in 1999. 2001 wasn't a very good year for us. All 3 of our children were diagnosed with a terminal illness called Sanfilippo Syndrome. Sanfilippo kids usually only live to be 10-13 years old and there is no cure. To learn more about our kids, you can visit our website which is caringbridge.org/ca/bennettboys. There is an experimental procedure called an Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant which had only been done on 2 Sanfilippo kids in the world and we had to fight our insurance company to pay for the transplants for Hunter and Tommy. We cannot do Ciara because her symptoms have progressed too far and it wouldn't benefit her. We filed an appeal with Kaiser and ended up getting one million dollars donated to Duke Medical Center to treat the boys. Unfortunately it took 6 months for us to get the money and in that time, the disease had progressed too much in Hunter and when we returned back to Duke, they wouldn't transplant him. In August of 2002, we went to Duke Univ. Medical Center for Tommy...Expand for more
to receive his stem cell transplant. He was in the hospital until December 23 and then a couple weeks later we found out that his transplant didn't work. He went back into the hospital in January for a second transplant, he was only in for 2 weeks and then he was discharged. About 2 months later we found out that he had a few donor cells growing but by June, his donor cells had died and he needed a third transplant. There was only one other child to recieve 3 back-to-back transplants and she passed away while we were at Duke. Tommy received his third transplant the day after his 4th birthday in September 2003. We were very excited when we found out that he was 100% donor cells this time. unfortunately he caught the Adeno Virus and because he didn't have an immune system to fight it off, he passed away on November 25, 2003. He was a pioneer in the medical field of stem cell/cord blood transplants and he is my hero! During the year that Tommy and I were at Duke, my husband, John, stayed in California with Ciara and Hunter. Ciara is 11it is always a roller coaster with her. She gets pneumonias a lot and we almost lost her over the summer. Hunter is 10 years old and boy is he is also in a wheelchair now and neither one can talk anymore. They keep me busy but I wouldn't trade them for the world. Other than that, I don't do alot. John is a full-time truck driver and a nursing student. If you are in town and have nothing to do, give me a call or send an email, I would love to talk or get together. I hope I didn't bore you too much with our little story. Take Care!
