Alicia's Story

I've been busy. I worked for San Mateo Police Department, after high school, to save up for college. Attended Colorado State University and worked on ranches to support myself and my horse, Ellie. Joined the U.S. Navy in 1997. Served as a Hospital Corpsman in Maryland and Guam. Earned a commissioning scholarship to George Washington University. Worked for the U.S. Senate (Senator John McCain), while at GWU. Commissioned in May 2001. Served in Norfolk, Virginia on the USS Tortuga and then, the USS Normandy. I was was the Communications Officer onboard USS Tortuga in charge of 17 sailors. We deployed to the Baltic Sea for 3 months to work with over 20 NATO countries. We also did a 9 month deployment in 2002/2003 for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. I was the Main Propulsion Assistant on the USS Normandy in charge of 40 sailors. We deployed to the war in 2005. Bought a farm in Virginia in 2003 and lived there with my old horse, Ellie, that I had since high school. Ellie died at the age of 34 and is buried on the farm. Married a U.S. Navy doctor, Mike Schueler, in 2006. We both received our Honorable Discharges from the U.S. Navy in late 2006. We lived on our modest cattle ranch in Florida. I run our cattle ranch business and work on restoring the ecological damage on our land. My husband worked as a local family physician. Our son was born 8/29/08. Once our son was school age, we sent him to Catholic elementary school where he did quite well. I did some substitute teaching when I didn’t have farm chores. That worked for awhile until our son was older. Unfortunately, the US history curriculum used by the school was actually from the state and focused almost entirely on colonial and pre Civil War (were they afraid to admit the South lost?!). nsitioned to public school in Florida. We have a family pony, Maggie, who was originally our niece’s and became John’s best friend. We also had a few riding horses and took in an occasional horse or donkey in need of care and/or training. Once they were healthy and ready for a new family, we found them suitable homes. Two of the horses were elderly, so we just kept them through their final years. We also kept one baby mini donkey because he was so difficult to retrain that rehoming him was an issue. He’s better, but now he’s family. We raised sheep, in addition to cattle, and had a few pet goats. During Covid, our son did school from home, PE was horseback riding, and I started on a Master’s in ecological restoration from Colorado State. In early 2022, we moved from Florida to Minnesota for my husband’s job, to be closer to family in California, and because we were concerned about our son’s public school education. He’s thriving here and loves the snow. We sold off most of our cattle herd and all of our sheep flock (they were a breed adapted to heat rather than cold). We brought our pet goats, one cow, the mini donkey, a horse, and a pony in a livestock trailer. It took us several days to get to Minnesota and we had to find overnight lodging for them. It was amusing watching our Florida raised animals react to seeing snow for the first time last winter. The three pet goats wanted none of it. The horse was fine (she’s a BLM Mustang, so she saw snow out west) but the pony and mini donkey were baffled. Our old cow named Fiona is a pet. She leads and loads on a trailer like a horse. We bought a heifer from a local farm to show Fiona what to do when the white stuff came. I’ll finish my ecology Masters in 2024. In the meantime, I doing some writing, working on restoration projects on our new farm, and caring for our farm animals.
