Alison's Story

Life This getting older stuff is NOT all it was cracked up to be. Oh well, better than the alternative. I have 2 children who turned 21 and 18 in 2007 and have been raising them alone since the divorce - when they were 4 and 7. Think I've done ok. The eldest attended the last 2 years of HS at the state's academy at the university and continues on the Dean's list to finish majoring in international business and German w a minor in Chinese. The youngest had a personality conflict w a horse in July 2005 but seems to be fully recovered (nothing stops that kid.) She graduated HS early in Dec 2007and plans to attend a local college in the fall. I was employed as fraud investigator for an internationally recognized utility and really thought I would be retiring from there until they decided to out source off shore. All the rage. Can you imagine how insane it is when a left hand and a right hand cannot coordinate? It pretty much puts the whole body at potential risk. Since the one governmental department cannot get a solid grip on Identity Theft INSIDE the USA (one hand) and have NO AUTHORITY OFF SHORE and if your credit is messed up once your identity is stolen, it could take YEARS of hassles and head aches "working with" the credit bureaus to get your rating back where it belongs WHICH INCLUDES decent interest rates and opportunities... NOT FUN. So now, with trade being so critical, tax incentives seem to be given to those corporations (the other hand) that outsource off shore... Now, losing your job and pension is one thing, but when they ship the accounts off shore (credit cards, utilities, bank account numbers when you use a check to pay, etc.) those accounts include your critical identity information: SSN, driver¿s license, date of birth, often your mother's maiden name, etc.. Put that into perspective acrss the whole web ... Potentially NOT PRETTY. So my public service comment, since every one ...Expand for more
of us can mess up our own credit rating well enough on our own, is this: KEEP a very careful eye on your credit history and critical identity info on a regular basis - at least once a year. Moving rapidly right along, since my kids are pretty much not under foot any longer and I am not officially old enough or wealthy enough to retire after that job went POOF, I then began a small LLC to dabble with from home. On a side tangent, my patent was published by the USPTO (Patent office) in Jan 08 - a little goodie for the automotive aftermarket and is already published on 7 websites and easily found in the engines. So now am looking to find a mfg co to get it off to the actual market. Of course I am biased, but hope this goodie allows me to become that which I have always aspired to become: a beach bum on some obscure tropical island with few cares and no stress. Dreamin is free - might as well dream BIG. In the mean time, in July 2007, I passed my state exam for insurance and am doing business to business sales. Sales in general are easy for me when I believe in the product, so commissions only (done it before) does not bother me at this point. We shall see how well this adventure goes. Never considered the idea of "playing" within the insurance industry, but it seems to be the right path for now. (PLAY/WORK - both 4 letter words, which sounds better??! At this age, I figure I need to WORK at something that I enjoy rather than HATE and if I enjoy it, isn't that a form of PLAY?!) Starting over in a career at the bottom of the totem pole for time off & having to crawl my way through the hurdles of any particular industry all over again, just does not appeal to me. With the insurance thing, I will be able to set my own hours and not HAVE to drive when the roads are horrid. Lemme tell ya though, the required education and state exams are brutal. But I passed and all is well - water under the bridge.
