Alison's Story
Life
Contrary to my guidance counselor's advice to my parents to not waste money sending me to college, I did, in fact attend college, where I eventually earned a M.S. in Special Ed. I married Jamil, the Asian guy who used to wait outside the school with flowers for me every Wed. in 1975, and we moved to Queens. We divorced amicably in 1980. In 1977, I started teaching for the NY city schools, and taught at Morris HS in the Bronx, for 19 years. I started out as a Special Ed teacher, but evolved into the Program Chairperson for the school and had a lot more power and responsibility than I ever wanted. I met my second husband there, and we were married in 1988. We own a home in Cortlandt Manor, which is in Northern Westchester. e vaccine in 1994. The effects of the Lyme and the vaccine were increasingly debilitating and I was forced to put in for early retirement in 1997. I now stay home and do all the things I never had time for while I was working. We adopted one of our former students, a young man who was born addicted to heroin and who suffered brain damage as a result. Although James was our "son" from the time he was our student, in the early '80's, we didn't make it legal until 1996. By then he was married and the stepfather of 2 teenagers, so we became parents and grandparents simultaneously. My husband, Carl, unfortunately also contracted Lyme in 1998 and is retiring this summer, at age 55. We plan to relocate either to San Diego, or if we can;t afford that, Florida, where my good friend and our former classmate Robin Rhea (nee Kriss) resides.
