Alison's Story
Once upon a time, I had to choose between my love of animals (Veterinary Science) and my love of English (English Literature). In the sixties and early seventies, they still thought that women couldn't handle large animals like horses in veterinary practice, so English Literature it was.
Wonderful though the learning was, studies in English lead directly to the pink collar (that is to say: seriously underpaid) ghetto of publishing. Unless one went on to a Ph.D. in English and then battled the hordes for one of the few teaching positions available in the 70's at the university level, one was reduced to either writing or publishing. At the end of my M.A. in English, I tried both and found neither satisfactory.
Eventually, I returned to the academy to take up the study of Psychology. Now, with a Ph.D. in Psychology from U. 0f T., I teach same at York University and have maintained a private psychotherapy practice since 1991.
I have been blessed with two children and have begun, at last, to surround myself with the animals I have always loved. Currently, I am honoured to share my life with a Siamese cat, an Abysinnian cat, a Jack Russell terrier, a draft-cross geld...Expand for more
ing and a thoroughbred mare. Soon, I hope to add a "Lassie" dog (Rough collie) to the extended family.
The Collie puppy (a fat white-ruffed sable male) will be coming home just after Halloween. This guy promises to be a huge noble beast with a very gentle disposition. The search for names is on. Am considering "Max", "Theo", "Trey" among others. Suggestions welcome!
Dec. 16: Gorgeous collie puppy is in residence and has been named "Dance". Thanks to all those who submitted suggestions. He is as wonderful as predicted but also getting quite LARGE and not taking "no" for an answer. In short, it is time for obedience school.
On a more positive note, the Jack Russell female (2 and a half years old and still not trustworthy as regards house-training before the puppy came) quite literally cleaned up her act once Dance arrived, becoming the older states-dog teaching by example. Small mercies.
Now suddenly have 4 horses; neighbouring vet asks me to board 2 young, sweet-natured mares in return for at-cost veterinary services for my two. I also have permission to ride said sweeties. How could I refuse?
Think we're at animal maximum for now. And I'm loving it!
