Allan's Story
Life
Ye Gods, it's been over 50 years since I came to New Zealand. I've worked here as a sales engineer, then as a professional deer hunter shooting for venison export (including out of helicopters - gawdawful dangerous!) for about 7 months, got out of it when they started into LIVE CAPTURE - even MORE dangerous!! Shot HUNDREDS of deer, my mates gave me the nickname Bullet. Then went back as a sales engineer in Christchurch. Other than when I was on the South Island's West Coast shooting, I have lived in Christchurch, which is a wonderful city, ideally situated, weather pretty good, not too big - around 400,000 population. Known as the Garden City of NZ - DOZENS of parks, gardens and green spaces. LOTS of different things to do here. About 30 golf courses - I loved golf - and it's very cheap here, and you can golf 12 months a year. Great fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, climbing (The late Sir Edmund Hillary was a New Zealander who I met several times - absolutely wonderful modest man!) camping, cycling, skiing. An outdoorsman's paradise. There are also a hell of a lot of sports clubs here - rugby, cricket, rugby league, soccer, tennis, lawn bowls, softball, archery, clay target shooting, track and field, swimming, rowing, kayaking, jetboating, fishing, cycling - you name it, there will be a club for it here, or even a number of them. NZ'ers are a country of participants in sports, not couch potatoes, as shown by the 20 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Some of New Zealand's best sports aren't even in the Commonwealth Games, like rowing, kayaking, and sailing, so the NZ team didn't do too bad! Almost EVERYONE in the country get behind our sports teams, which leads to a great atmosphere in the pubs, especially if there's something like a rugby test on!
Well, on 4th September 2010, Christchurch really changed, with our 7.1 Richter quake. Then on 22nd February 2011 came the really devastating one when the whole centre of the city was badly damaged and 185 people lost their lives. There was also widespread devastation in many neighborhoods and suburbs, some of which were so badly affected that they were declared "Red Zones" and every home in them has had to be demolished.
In the months after the February quake I decided I wanted to do something to help the city, so I found a job with a company called Geotechnics as their Services Location Coordinator. My crew of 3 including myself were responsible f...Expand for more
or locating underground utilities and services using ground penetrating radar and other instruments, for a massive geotechnical investigative drilling project which Geotechnics had the contract for. Our crews drilled over 8000 holes in Christchurch in about 15 months and the 3 of us marked them all out so they didn't hit any pipes, cables etc. with the drills. My 3 crews only had 5 service hits in 8000 holes, none of which could be seen with the GPR (ground penetrating radar) - 0.06%!!
When the drilling contract finished I found a job doing what I love, as a sales engineer again. My territory was the whole South Island, a truly beautiful place. Most people pay thousands of dollars to come here to see this place. I got to drive around it for my job and get paid very well for it!! I've driven over 1.9 million kilometres in the South Island and can honestly say it's never been boring - it never looks the same way twice! Needless to say my Pentaxes were in the vehicle all the time! Another thing about working in sales in NZ was that I got oppurtunities for travel that I would have never had if I'd stayed in Canada. We're so far away from the rest of the world that in order to participate in training courses, conferences, etc. you MUST travel, so I've had the chance to go around the world FIVE times, up to Hong Kong 4 times, Singapore 3 times, and many places in Australia like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane more than enough. It's been fascinating!
For the past 16 years I have been taking action photos of our local rugby club - the New Brighton Rugby Football Club. We put them up on the big screen in the club every Saturday after the games. I have an archive of over 32,000 shots of NBRFC in action!! All the photos you see on the newbrightonrugby.co.nz website are mine, including the banner photo on the home page. It's a great club!! We have Senior Grade teams and about 16 Junior Grade teams ranging from Under 6's to Under 13's (when the kids go off to high school and play for their school teams, then the keen ones come back to us as 18 year olds). NBRFC celebrated our Centenary last year 1921 - 2021!! That was a HUGE weekend! When I filled out my renewal subscription form for club membership, there was a question that said "Health Issues?" I answered "Too many drinks at NBRFC!!" At least the clubrooms are only 400 metres from home, so I can nearly crawl home if I need to!! We've had some BIG Saturday nights down there!!
