Allan's Story

I served in the Army shortly after graduating from BHS. Lucky, no Viet Nam tours for me! After discharge from the Army I met Jan on the library steps in our freshman year and we married in our junior year. We both received degrees from Penn State. After progressing up the corporate latter to middle financial manager at The Continental Group and immediately following the birth of our daughter Allana I earned my MBA. My career started in Continental Can’s management development program. In nearly 40 years I held many senior corporate financial management positions up to and including Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in several multinational US based corporations. During that time I served as a corporate officer for every company that employed me. Business activities took me overseas to most western European countries, The Czech Republic, China, Japan, Australia and South America. I lived abroad twice for approximately a year each time, England and France. I had a lovely apartment on the Parc Monceau in Paris. In the Army they called those assignments TDY – no family with me, but lots of trips home and family trips to visit me. Teaching was my second professional endeavor. During my financial career I also taught accounting as an adjunct professor and managed several of my company’s co-operative education programs. Molding young future financial managers was as rewarding to me as being one. We have held most major volunteer positions in our church lives, me; Moderator, Treasurer, Head Deacon and Jan; Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Directors. I tried retiring several times always missing the activity, responsibility and developing people. Each time retirement lasted a few months until a former employer came to me asking for either consulting help or actually returning as an employee. After a health wake-up call, I found volunteering at the National Children’s Advocacy Center here in Huntsville, Alabama (Google it, it’s a wonderful organization). I was looking for something to pay back society for my good fortune and simultaneously something that would benefit sexually abused and neglected children following the unfortunate incident at my alma mater Penn State. The $ pay sucks (pays nothing), but the hours are extremely flexible and the non-financial rewards are “priceless” as the commercial goes. Earning the “Volunteer of the Year” award and dramatically improving the number of paid exhibitors at their annual Symposium, I have found a ho...Expand for more
me away from home. We lived in five states, most near water and navigated in blue water all over the Long Island Sound to most major attractions on the north shore of Long Island, NY and out as far as Block Island, the Elizabeth Island chain, Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod and Nantucket. We once went in search of a whale off Provincetown, MA and actually touched one off the starboard side of the boat, bigger than the boat itself. On inland rivers and lakes we cruised every mile of Lake Norman while living near Charlotte, NC and navigated on the Tennessee River from the Ohio River to Chattanooga, TN through many locks, the largest of which is at the Wilson Dam with a vertical lift of 93 feet while residing in Alabama. Living in Connecticut in the winters we snow skied in Vermont and once in Colorado on our 25th wedding anniversary. After boating for 25 years in four progressively bigger craft we tried trailer camping in a 30 foot Airstream for several months once Jan retired (she is 3 years younger than me). Didn’t much care for it, so we sold it and bought our 3rd Corvette in 40 years, a 2003 50th Anniversary Edition model. Jan’s near 40 year career (mostly in education) included holding the Academic Dean’s position at Katherine Gibbs Schools. All you secretarial science classmates will recognize that name. Ed owns his own pool cleaning business in Palm Beach County, Florida, Allana is the Southeast Regional Account Manager for Intergraph selling 911 systems to police and fire municipal organizations, Corey is in the pool cleaning business like his dad and Shane is graduating from UCF and pursuing his MS in Accounting. Life has been good and continues to be so. Mama, the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are happy. Yes, recently we were blessed with our first GREAT GRAND CHILD – Hailey Kay. Jan and I spend our time pursuing our separate outside interests, yet enjoy activities together including professional and collegiate sporting activities (split between Penn State, University of Alabama and yes the Steelers), traveling, biking, walking with our Standard Schnauzer Max and spending at least three days a week at the fitness center. Me, well I have good health, a great wife and family, a wonderful pet, a house where it’s warm and the cost of living is cheap, my cars to maintain and tinker with (the cleanest damn cars in town, miles of greenway to bike and walk, my volunteer work and yes, my Corvette. LIFE IS MORE THAN GOOD, IT’S GREAT!
