Allan's Story
Sometimes I feel like I have been everywhere and done everything in my life time. But the one thing I regret the most is maybe not getting to fly a B-52. One day my flight instructor, a Captain and B-52 pilot, while we were air born giving me flight instruction, asked me if I wanted to take a ride in a B-52. I hardly believed my ears and almost lost control of the plane. Of course I said "you bet". After we landed I asked where would the flight take us and he said Russia. Of course just to their outer air space and then fly back. I asked how long would we be airborne? He said 3 days with inflight refueling.
Being an instrument technician on B-52's and KC-135's I knew the B-52 quite well and knew just where I would be seated. (next to the Navag...Expand for more
ator. And with a parachute on and having to eat and sleep right there, I didn't think I could do it. I feel like if I had of went the Capt. would have let me sit in the co-pilots seat once and take control of the plane. That's what upsets me the most for not going.. I have never gotten over it.....Loved my Air Force days.
right after graduation I started enrolling in NM A&M, but before I could complete I got my draft number and asked the Army recrutor how close was I to being drafted. He said with that # you might have a notice by the time you get home. I was not about to get taken into the army and I always had interest in airplanes, so I went and talked to the Air Force
and decided to join. One of the few best decisions I have ever made.
