Allen's Story

OVERVIEW - The Rest of the Story It was my honor and good fortune to have served my country in uniform for 27 years. My adventures began with my delayed enlistment in to the United States Air Force during my senior year of high school. I would enter active duty following HS graduation and summer vacation with a guaranteed job of becoming a Radio Operator. This position had the potential to lead to a future aircrew position on one of several USAF aircraft. Following my BMTS in Texas and my technical training in Mississippi, my entire Radio Operator class was assigned and dispersed throughout the Southeast Asian Theatre of Operation. I was assigned to the 1974th Communications Group located at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base (RTAFB), Thailand. This base was the home of the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron (Triple Nickel) which was the largest F-4 Phantom II squadron in the world. The Vietnam Conflict (War) ended for U.S. involvement in DEC '73; I arrived "in country" for my one year remote tour in FEB '74. Thailand was a very interesting tour! After Thailand I was assigned to Andrew AFB, Maryland. Andrews was an "OK" assignment but I was extremely fortunate to have PCS'd (permanently reassigned) from Andrews to the Panama Canal Zone in 1976. The Panama Canal Zone was sovereign U.S. soil which bordered the canal 5 miles on each side and ran the entire distance from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. This was an incredibly exhilarating and beautiful assignment. The fact that I was able to cycle thru three PCS assignments during my initial four year enlistment was extremely unique and fortuitous. Panama would become my personal training ground for what would become my life changing and greatest challenge; application, selection, and qualification for USAF Pararescue! In Panama I would start sport parachute jumping, extensive physical training to include long distance swimming, long distance running, and heavy calisthenics. Prior to departing Panama, I prequalified for Pararescue (PJ) Selection and I would go on to "make the hard cut" for "Indoc" (Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX) and "the Pipeline" which would include Army Airborne Training (Fort Benning, GA), Special Forces Underwater Operations (Combat Diver) Course (Trumbo Point, Key West, FL), Aircrew Survival and Resistance Training (Fairchild AFB, Spokane, WA), and extensive medical and tactical operations in New Mexico. (Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, NM). Upon completion/qualification of PJ training I was afforded my choice of any worldwide PARARESCUE assignment; I chose RAF Woodbridge, England. England and Pararescue were both incredibly outstanding and exciting! I was a PJ Team Leader and Jump-master! We did it all; Parachute ops, Day jumps/Night jumps, SCUBA ops, North Sea Day ParaSCUBA ops, North Sea Night ParaSCUBA ops, intentional Tree Landing jumps, Jump-master ops, Mountain climbing ops, Mountain rescue ops, Ice climbing ops, Glacier ops, Alpine ski ops, Nordic ski ops, Medical ops, Escape & evasion ops, Long range infiltration/exfiltration ops, Marksmanship proficiency, Special mission M-134 (mini-gun) ops, Space Shuttle recovery ops, and more. The primary mission of Pararescue remains as combat rescue and recovery of downed aircrew from behind enemy lines. Emblazoned on the flash (device worn on the maroon beret) and adopted as the core value of each and every PJ is the creed "THAT OTHERS MAY LIVE!" In England I was afforded the opportunity to work along side of true American heroes! I loved the USAF and Pararescue!! I departed the aforementioned with an inter-service transfer to attend and qualify as a U.S. Army Warrant Officer helicopter pilot with training conducted at Fort Rucker, AL. Nearing completion of rotary-wing flight training I requested an assignment to West Germany (FRG). I was assigned to an Attack Helicopter Company in Germany flying the OH-58 Kiowa helicopter as an aeroscout. This too was another great assignment and the flying was plentiful; at times I would be flying very slowly with my skids below the tree tops which was like walking on the tree canopies, at other times I would be concealed in a hover-hole with my rotor blades swirling inches from the tree branches, and still other times dashing rapidly across open terrain seeking observation and concealment. Our real world mission was to defend the Fulda Gap and to seek out and destroy Soviet armor had we gone to war. As my West German assi...Expand for more
gnment was nearing completion I applied and was accepted for Army fixed-wing training with further follow-on training to the advanced and fully aerobatic OV-1D Mohawk reconnaissance aircraft. This was a BIG jump and a new challenge! I would successfully qualify and I would bounce between Savannah Georgia and South Korea twice. I would take my young family along for these adventures! I would become an OV-1D Instructor Pilot and later an Instrument Flight Examiner and become very comfortable flying vertically, inverted, or screaming out of the sky while performing one of our many high speed evasive maneuvers. As a family we enjoyed our South Korean (ROK) assignments! As I prepped to depart ROK, the OV-1D Mohawk was nearing retirement following 34 years of active military service. My family and I departed for Alaska with me flying the C-12D/F1/F3 King Air. Alaska was another great and spectacularly beautiful flying assignment. Upon completion of our 3 year Alaskan assignment we would return to Hunter AAF and Savannah GA with me flying a "recce version" of the King Air the RC-12N/P. Upon retirement from the military I was hired to fly for the leading fractional/corporate jet operator in America where I continue to fly today as a line Captain. In 2015 I was honored that my 3 adult kiddos were simultaneously on active duty with the USAF (our 4th kiddo was still in high school). Life has been and continues to be very good! I thank my Lord and Savior for all the gifts and talents that he has entrusted within me and for my late, great Mom & Dad who raised me! Proverbs 3: 5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy path. _______________________________________________________________________________ I never thought that this would happen to me! I always played by the rules and I vowed to myself long before I married that I would stay within the boundaries and remain faithful and true. Now here I stand ...... guilty as charged!! "An Affair to Remember" This other relationship started with a formal introduction back in '87. She was rugged, she was well developed and we were "intimate" for 9 wonderfully, beautiful years! Initially I found her somewhat intimidating as she came with a reputation ..... but then again I too had a reputation. I know, I know ...... she wasn't that sexy and she had a lot of bumps and things ...... but we were close! Some people think that she was ugly, but I think that her ugliness was a thing of beauty. She knew me and I knew her! I would leave my lovely wife both in the dark of night and during the light of day to spend many a memorable hour in this other lady's company. She would embrace me in her special way and resist my attempts to free myself from her grasp.* I am not sure if I travelled halfway across our planet to be with her or if she travelled halfway across our planet to be with me. We crisscrossed the world several times over to spend countless hours together. This relationship that had its roots in Alabama, progressed to Arizona, then on to Savannah, Georgia; thereafter on to South Korea. Deeply involved in this relationship, I followed her back to Savannah with her following me (and my Mrs) again back to Korea. I understood that my Mrs knew " of this other Love," but somehow she accepted this strange and seductive relationship! Yes, yes ......... she was temperamental and she had a reputation of being "a widow maker." OK, OK ....... yes, I saw her truly ugly and dangerous side and she displayed her vengeance on me more than once! She challenged my dominance and my control several times. She was subtle and she would play games that had me questioning her integrity. I forgave her even after she tried to take my life back in '92! Our long and memorable relationship ended in May of '96. It was not a surprise .... we both knew that it had to end. We bid "adieu" in the fields of South Korea amicably and my family and I departed for Alaska. Ever since that day like the sad and lonely Michael Jackson song ......... "She's Out of My Life." A couple of weeks ago I passed thru Norfolk, Virginia ...... and there she was!!! She had aged, she was somewhat haggard, perhaps she was neglected ....... never the less my heart accelerated!! I went over to her and I paid my respects! She is gone but not forgotten!!
