Allison's Story
Sometimes you blaze new trails in your life, and other times you go along the paths laid out before you. I'm blessed to have done both. After graduating NRHS, I found Nazareth College the perfect place to grow, think and explore new horizons--and realize that I'm better at using a computer than programming one! What would our kids think today of those very first Apple computers that came out in the mid 80s??
Graduated with my BA in English /Writing in three years (thank you NRHS AP classes) and went out to flex my writing muscles, working as a technical writer and finally as a newspaper reporter. Very inspiring to meet former President Gerald Ford during a dedication ceremony, and later the men who flew on the real Memphis Belle in WW II.
Three years later, I headed to Cornell University, working full time in their supercomputer facility as a science writer and completing my master's degree in communications three-quarters time. My time there was amazing, and who knew my thesis research--how email in a business organization changes communication and organization dynamics--would not even approa...Expand for more
ch the tip of the communication iceberg that developed thanks to technology??
I received my master's degree in 1993 and, several months later, returned to the metropolitan NY area, where I stayed for several years and enjoyed working in the public relations, marketing, and publishing arenas. I bought my own condo and renovated it myself. I experienced Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and shortly after the turn of the millennium, I met my future husband. A year later he proposed to me on a gondola in Venice, and we married the following year. In the process I inherited two girls and a boy, two of whom are now grown ups, of which one is married and has two beautiful girls. Yes, they call me Nanna!
I'm still writing and editing, but now I do it for a variety of clients. I own a small PR, writing, and graphic design business, and my staff and I have a great time working on interesting projects. I teach reading and writing as a literacy volunteer, and basically just give thanks every day for every wonderful opportunity I've experienced.
As Joe Walsh sang, "Life's been good to me so far."
