Allison's Story

Life I'm going to try and make this short, but I seem to have a habit of blathering on. After high school I spent 12 years in Tampa. 2 years at USF, where I accomplished very little except that deciding sororities are a big waste of time. Moved to South Tampa which was a more bohemian community. Took 7 years to get my Liberal Arts degree. I waitressed the whole time I was in Tampa, which usually left me part-time in school, part time on the journey. I drank a lot and did a lot of drugs(what they call self-medicating these days). I got a bunch of tatoos before everybodies granny had a tatoo. The scene started becoming redundant, so I started taking road trips, either by myself or with friends, cross country to the west coast, and back to Florida after a while. One year I dedicated myself to going in particular to Alaska. Skagway became my destination because I knew a guy who grew up with a guy that was the food and beverage manager at a "resort" hotel in Skagway. It wasn't anything like a resort, I quit and took Olde Tyme Photos for the summer. I returned to Florida for the winter, and did a 2nd season with the photo thing. I've also drove a van for a small plane service, worked at the Post Office, worked as a Medical Assistant for 2 years (this was my favorite job because I got to help people), and I spent the last 4 seasons working at a place called Liarsville, catering a salmon b...Expand for more
ake that sometimes served 500 or more tourists. I moved there full-time in '98. Work is seasonal up there, meaning that all we did businesswise was tourists. 10,000 a day coming off of cruise ships into a town that's populated by 500 people. We didn't do oil, gas, fish or timber, just tourists from May through September. Most people, including me, were unemployed in the winter. The last place I worked had a vaudeville type show, goldpanning and a salmon bake. I was a greasy hippy working the salmon bake with 7 other greasy hippies, sometimes serving as many as 500 a day. In 2000 I bought a house. I was married in 2001 to an Englishman, Douglas. For those of you who don't remember your history, Skagway is the Gateway to the Klondike Gold Rush. You remember, "hauling a ton of goods" over the Chilkoot Trail. I have no children, although maybe later. In Jan. 2006 we decided to leave Alaska because it was too expensive. I stayed in Tampa the summer of 2006. Then came back west to stay with my husband in Los Angeles. I didn't like LA much, so I'm now with my parents in rural Nevada, 1 1/2 hours south of Reno. My husband is still in LA. I have 1 husky from Alaska, my chocolate lab died unexpectedly last year while I was in Tampa. I don't know where I'm going or what I'm doing, but it's the ride that matters the most anyway. I hope that all of you are finding health and happiness. - Allie
