Al's Story

You may remember me as moderately active in high school; no band, no big sports, but an active thespian who also enjoyed photography and radio club. I never seriously studied, but enjoyed business, co writing the Wall Street Wizards column in Wy-Hi with Doug Jose in my junior year and getting active in politics in 1968. My circle of friends at RHS was limited, but I had lots of friends in Riverview, Trenton, Grosse Ile and elsewhere. Immediately after graduation I enlisted in the U.S. Navy. I spent my first year and half working my way through training in Tennessee and California. I met the love of my life in December 1970 and a month later I joined my squadron, VP-46 in Adak Alaska. After three years of active duty serving mostly in the Far East, including flying combat missions off the coast of Vietnam in 1972, I returned not to Wyandotte, but rather to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Susan, my wife of thirty-five years had moved there with her family. I proposed to Susan the night I came home from the Navy. A week later I started college, with a whole new appreciation for academics. The discipline I learned in the Navy prepared me for school. The GI Bill and part-time work allowed me a degree of freedom to live on my own and avoid a roommate. I never lived in a college dorm or frat house, but I figured my time in Navy barracks around the world was a good substi...Expand for more
tute. Susan and I married in April, 1974 and I graduated from Marquette University in 1977 with a BS in mathematics. We moved to Illinois and I completed my MBA from the University of Chicago in 1981. We moved around a lot, with ten permanent addresses in our thirty-five years of marriage. At first, our moves were tied to my employment. Our two oldest children were born in Wisconsin and our two youngest were born in Illinois. Later, we moved as Susan advanced her management career in several hospitals. Now we have only our oldest daughter and grandson and our youngest child living near us. We returned to Wyandotte six years ago, a thirty-four year absence for me. I'm happy to be back home. During these tough times, I'm reminded of all the jobs I lost over the years. I had three companies I worked for go bankrupt. With the last one, in 1981, being the largest in U.S. business history up to that time. When I lost my last job in 1991, I began doing some side work while looking for my next job. I eventually decided I enjoyed working for myself and abandoned my job search. In the past 18 years I've enjoyed slow steady growth and I now have a company that employs a few people in the US, Canada and India. It's been a long journey and I'm looking forward to hearing about other classmates at our 40 year reunion in July. Check it out and plan on joining us.
