Amber's Story

Life My life...after high school I went to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The summer after my third year of college I met my husband while we were on summer break both working at Meijer in Kalamazoo. Tad and I were together about a year and a half when we found out I was pregnant. After a very difficult and medically complicated pregnancy our first son was born on Wednesday, February 25, 1998. Andrew Thomas Dixon "Drew", was born 8 weeks early by emergency c-section. He was breathing wonderfully but had an odd complication that required surgery and hospitalization for his little body. He came home on March 25 only to be readmitted for additional surgery on April 22 - during my final exam week at Western. On May 13, 1998 he was home for good with us and healthy! After that semester, Tad transferred to Western from U of M. In 1999 I graduated with my BA in Political Science. In 2000 Tad graduated with his BB in Accounting and we were married July 8, 2000 (3 years, 11 months, and 1 day after our first date). One month later we moved back to Rochester where Tad took a position with Deloitte & Touche in Detroit. I began teaching at Oak Park High School. My first summer vacation Tad and I got pregnant with our second child. We confirmed the pregnancy, oddly enough, during a terrible week - September 12, 2001 I found out I was officially pregnant. After a full school year pregnant (that was a challenge) I went on maternity leave on May 1. Monday, May 6 (my sister's 18th birthday) my water broke. Joseph Dwight Dixon "Joey" was born on Tuesday, May 7 at 4:42am, fully healthy and home with us 2 days later. While I was pregnant ...Expand for more
we had been looking to buy our first home but realized that the Detroit area was a bit more expensive. For that reason and more we decided to move back to the Kalamazoo area. Tad got a job back in the Kalamazoo area in November 2002 and I decided to try to finish out the school year. Tad stayed with his parents during the week and returned to us on the weekend. So it was me, my two boys and my family helping out. By January, we realized that living apart stunk so I left my job and moved to Portage, MI in March of 2003. I obtained a permanent sub position due to staff relocation due to the Iraq war. That summer I interviewed and obtained a part-time position teaching Economics and US Government at Portage Northern High School while Drew began kindergarten and I went back to Western to start working towards my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership. I have been at Portage Northern High School since the fall of 2004. In June of 2006 I should also have my Master's Degree, and that fall, Tad will go back for his MBA! Joey is 4 and crazy, never stops moving, brave, funny, and a cute blonde haired blue eyed replica of me! Drew is thoughtful, beautiful, loves playing baseball, reading at a 5th grade level in 2nd grade, he is in the church choir and was invited to sing at a school board meeting by his principal. The Superintendent told him "You're braver than I am young man." We're so proud! Tad is working at an insurance company, going to Pistons game, and trying to beat me at poker - he got me into it and I've finished better than him in our last 6 tournaments! I love my job, I love my life, and I miss some old friends. How are you?
