Amy's Story

Life I am the single mother of two wonderful girls -- Peyton, who is 13 (going on 20), and Kiele, who is 9 and has Down syndrome -- a great kid! We were recently notified that Kiele will be receiving wish from the Make-A-Wish foundation of Michigan, which we are VERY excited about. When her doctor in Ann Arbor nominated her, I was really concerned because I thought this type of thing was for "terminal" kids, but I now know that it is also for kids who are considered critically ill. And, while Kiele is mostly healthy, she does have two major medical issues that could be deadly if we don't keep on top of things -- fortunately, I am pretty "in tune" with her medical problems and hopefully they will never present a concern of that type! Peyton will be entering High School next year -- we just had her freshman orientation last night -- I can't believe all the opportunities kids have these days compared to when we were in school! She is hoping to go to Michigan State when she graduates and wants to go into the Human Services field -- either as a family counsellor or a school counsellor or maybe a special education teacher, which I think is awesome!!! As for me, I am the Assessor for the City of Bay City and I absolutely love it!!! I completed my bachelor's degree in 2002 after 20 years of working on it -- yippee! In 2001, I bought an old Victorian home in the historic district in Bay City (I think the whole City is historic) and I'm fixing it up. Currently, I am working on attaining my Level IV Certification as an Assessor (which is the highest you can go!)and I was elected to the School Board in June 2002 and learning all sorts of new stuff (like how much money the schools do NOT have). I work with the Bay Area United Way on their annual campaign (mostly because they helped my family so much when my youngest was born, but also because it is the right thing to do!) -- which is a lot of fun! I can't wait to see everyone again and see how much everyone's lives have changed!!! I wish our 25th reunion was sooner than two years away!!! School I'm sure everyone remembers who my biggest...Expand for more
crush was ... Troy Norris, of course! I thought he was the love of my life! Fortunately, I have learned a lot since those days! Troy is probably VERY lucky to have NOT ended up with me! As for teachers, I cannot name just one that inspired me more than another. I enjoyed MOST of the teachers at DKHS. And, most memorable was probably Mr. Harrington and only because of how he passed out report cards in 10th grade before our Christmas assembly. He read through each grade then called the students up to collect their report cards. When he got to mine, he started, "A .... A .... A .... (his voice got louder) A .... A .... (and almost shouting) AMY!" I would have loved to crawl under a ROCK I was so embarrassed. Yes, I was proud to have gotten all A's, but the way he did it! GEEZ! I was a 10th grader! I didn't want everyone to know! If I had high school to do over again, I would probably try to be friends with more people. As I get older, I realize how important true friends are, and those we make during our youth tend to be some of the best! I still keep in touch with several of my friends from DKHS (though some of them I haven't seen in a VERY long time!) ... Jim Wells, Tony Green, Ed Arney, Bev Hamilton, Sheri Remeur, Connie Wooer, Melea Moeller, etc. I only wish I had more time to devote to keeping in touch with these people! Some of the best times I remember were during sports practice: volleyball and track. Just hanging out with friends at football and basketball games is another really great memory! And, probably the strangest thing I ever did was during my first hour class of 9th grade. I was in Mr. Lamphear's Algebra class ... it was my first day at DKHS! I turned around to the girl behind me and said, "Hi! I'm Amy, I'm new here!" To my surprise, she said, "So am I!" That was Sheri Remeur, and we both still laugh about that first conversation ... and strangely, we are still friends! I'm sure I could fill this whole page with memories like this, but I would probably bore everyone else, but me! So, ... I guess I'll just start looking at what others have written!
