Amy 's Story

Born and raised in New Dorp. I went to PS 41 and than was part of the first graduating class at Egbert Junior High....now they call it Egbert Intermediate. Worked in mid-town Manhattan on Park Ave as a actuarial associate and pension plan advisor until 1977. I married my husband in 1973. Met him in Doherty's bar on New Dorp Lane....I loved that place, especially Harry, the elder Doherty. Had my first child, a daughter, in 1977. Named her Melanie. My second didn't come along until 1983. Another daughter who we named Courtney. Than 12 months and 3 days later our last was born, Luke. My husband worked on Staten Island for Con Edison for 35 years. I did the stay at home Mom thing...PTA president etc etc. In 2000 my husband was involved in an on the job accident that devestated our lives. He suffered a broken leg and crush injuries to the back of his right thigh. He spent 3 years in and out of hospitals and nursing rehab centers, having one surgery after another. His 13th surgery resulted in the doctors amputating his leg. It would take half a life time to type all the injuries, both medical, neurological and psychological that he still suffers from. On the bright side, he has one of those hundred thousand dollar computer legs. He just doesn't use it to it's fullest extent. Last year we moved to NC. Hoping it would be a better place to retire to for Mark. My daughter Melanie joined the US Navy in July 2001. She was part of a "delayed entry" program waiting for an opening in their corpsman program. They told her they would have an opening in Jan of 2002. Than 9/11 happened. On 9/26 at 7:30 PM the Navy called our house. The next day Melanie was gone and we didn't see her until December when she graduated from Basic training. She was a baby ...Expand for more
catcher (or Baby Doc) at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. for 18 months. While she was stationed there she married a fellow corpsman. Their first child, Jacob was born at NNMC in June of '03. She spent 30 months in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Her second child, Margaret Ann was born in Cuba in '04. She's currently stationed in Great Lakes after spending 7 months taking an intensified Preventive Medicine course in San Diego. I have no idea where she's headed next. She is also a single mom now. (Would it be wrong for me to say Thank God right at this point?) Courtney (aka Cook) is 25 and was married to the love of her life, Spencer, in the gardens at the Shadowbrook in NJ last June. She moved down here to North Carolina this passed May. She's manager of a Victoria's Secret store down here. Prior to coming here she was the Specialties manager and asst store manager in a Home Depot in NJ. The kid could probably build a house on her own if she needed to! My son Luke, my baby at age 24, stayed behind in Staten Island. After my husbands accident my husband was heavily medicated and extremely irrational and violent most of the time. I guess Oxycodone, Morphine and Vicodin cocktails do that to you. In any case, Luke left college and took a part time job on SI so he could help me. Actually, he was in fear of my safety, and he watched over me. He finally returned to school last year. He's a student at John Jay college of Criminal Justice. He is studying International law and Terrorism, but he is waiting to be called by the NYPD to start training at the police academy. My life has had it's fair share of ups and downs. Some days are better than others, but every day I wake up breathing is a good day!!!! Well, that's me in a nutshell.
