Andre's Story
I'm guessing we all arrived at Laurinburg Institute with different life circumstances and for different reasons. My right hand man Damond Henderson came from Madison, Wisconsin. He was a football player with an almost perfect S.A.T. score. Wake Forest University recruited him. My roommate at Laurinburg Institute, Jamal Boyce was in the streets in the Bronx. Then, there was me. I was an intermediary type. Poor attendance in NYC high schools. Single parent household. No known brothers til' age 46. No known sisters til' age 46. Failing grades. But, Summer, 1990 Fordham University Upward Bound program accepted me. I got A's and B's in that program. The program was comprised of lower level collegiate classes. I went to Laurinburg Institute right after that experience ready to move forward. I graduated from Laurinbug Institute in '91 and went on to Fayetteville State University. Transferred to North Carolina Central University for semester '93. I finished my last 3 years of college at University of North Carolina at Asheville. It was an empowering liberal arts experience. 115 years of Laurinburg Institute history - Black History/American History. And, I'm committed to working with fellow alumn to ensure our school is on par with competing prep schools like Maine Central Institute, Oak Hill Academy, Piney Woods School, etc. We can compete academically, in athletics, and in recruiting students and teachers. Our school needs new leadership. We need a new board that fundraises and grows its endowment like every other private school. We also need to digitize student records. Imagine a school in business 115 years with NONE of its history or student records digitized. That is, saved to a data base, in the cloud, or saved to some software application. That's Laurinburg Institute! Our school has no organized records of graduates. Laurinburg Institute also needs to create an alumni association that includes ALL alumni. Our current alumni association consists of Friends of Bishop McDuffie and Beverly Battle, President of National Alumni of Laurinburg Institute (NALI). They're mostly in the DC, Maryland, Virginia (DMV) area and North Carolina. And, they're mostly in their 50's, 60's, or older. We want alumni of all ages and graduating classes participating in our alumni association.
