More about Andre:"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. -- Joseph Campbell As an 18 year old USC student, I was called to the old MGM studio lot to audition for the role of a 16 year old Jewish kid named Sonny. Actress Debra Winger once suggested in a television documentary that we encounter roles based on what we want to learn. I was so excited to get called back to read for the role of Sonny with writer and producer Phil Alden Robinson. I had no feature film credits. Ended up getting told I wasn't ready yet for the responsibility, and the role went to Patrick Dempsey. What I was shown about responsibility as a cultural worker at such a young age turned out to be a polite Hollywood understatement. Found out shortly afterwards by my father I was the grandson of a high level Norwegian Nazi who played both sides of the fence. What did that mean? I have an inquisitive mind and was informed of very little at the time about his war activities. That was easy. Los Angeles didn't have a Shoah Foundation Institute. I was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. And my father married American women. What little knowledge I had sti...Expand for more
ll caused me to question the risks of attempting to explore Hollywood roles without knowing who I was or being clear about my responsibilities concerning the past. I ended up taking USC film classes without even knowing my grandfather had owned a film production company. And I ventured eastward in search of answers to my questions. What a lengthy process. Didn't find out the Holocaust reached as far north in Europe as Norway until the year 2001. By that time, I was 34 years old. The way I chose to handle the truth as it finally unfolded to me was to structure a screenplay called Slaying the Dragon--A fearless investigative reporter must face the hidden criminal past of his family as he works to reveal the men who murdered his parents. So what's significant about writing a screenplay about power and corruption? It's significant for me, because my grandfather launched the European film careers of actresses Sonja Wigert and Kirsten Heiberg. That was before he started meddling in the legal and financial affairs of Ernst Glaser--concert master for Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, and Victor M. Goldschmidt--father of modern geochemistry, in addition to the synagogues, and some of the Jewish families that were deported from Norway and murdered by the Germans. To a profound degree, my biography has turned out to be a journey of exploration into the subjects of individual and group theft, guilt, concealment, and future redemption, with the overarching theme of love vs. power. Actress Sonja Wigert's biography by author Iselin Theien was released in Scandinavia September 2010 by publisher Cappelen Damm. A documentary on actress Kirsten Heiberg is in the works in Norway and a biography on her is in the works in Germany.".
