Andrew's Story
I am Andrew W. Brown III. I attended Southwest High School in 1970. I was scheduled to graduate in 1973, however, I graduated in August 1972. I was a member of the JROTC Color Guard. Following high school, I attended Morehouse College where I was scheduled to graduate in 1976. However, due to my failure to complete course requirements for graduation, (I was not allowed to complete them at this time) because I had joined the Army's delayed entry program and was shipped off to basic training in Aug 76. I returned to Fort McPherson, GA in 1979 and received my degree from Morehouse College. I retired from the Army in August 2000 after 24 years of service. I presently teach JROTC at Haralson County High School in Talapoosa, GA. I am divorced. I have three sons, ages 31, 29 and 19. As I look back on my life, I can truly say ...Expand for more
that despite the fact that I am divorced, I did not divorce my children. I was a mainstay in their life and made every effort to be there for them. I appreciate the fact that they have thanked me on occasion for being there for them. As a father, this was key for me. Any man can father a child if he is physically capable, but it takes a special man to be called "Dad." In life, I have learned that there are no guarantees. One must make an effort to establish and maintain a viable relationship with God, and set a good example for your children. Black men should serve as positive role models for others to emulate. Finally it is critical, that we constantly tell those who are dear to us that we love them. For we are not gifted to know the minute, hour or day when we will depart this place affectionately called earth.
