Andrew's Story

Life ANDREW J. FINKEL Commander, Supply Corps, U.S. Navy, retired CDR Andrew J. Finkel, Supply Corps, United States Navy, retired was born in Manhattan, New York on December 3, 1947. He graduated from Conard High School in West Hartford, CT in 1965. After attending college and working in the civilian community in Florida and Connecticut, he enlisted in the Navy in May, 1975 and was assigned to the Naval Hospitals at Great Lakes IL, Portsmouth VA, and the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda MD. After receiving certification in HLA typing and testing at Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, DC he returned to the Naval Hospital Portsmouth VA where he was in charge of the Blood Bank and was the only certified HLA technician in a major (1400 bed) Naval hospital facility. He completed his degree requirements while on Active Duty receiving an Associates Degree from George Washington University and his Bachelor's Degree from the University of the State of New York. CDR Finkel received his commission from the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in November 1982. From there he attended Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia. From May 1983 to March 1986, he was assigned as Disbursing and Sales Officer for the USS Donald B. Beary (FF-1085), home-ported in Norfolk, VA, completing two extended Mediterranean cruises and numerous Caribbean and North Atlantic cruises. He was then assigned to the Naval Audit Service, Western Region, Alameda, CA. In October 1986, CDR Finkel left Active Service and began his Naval Reserve career. r and Port Services Officer for Military Sealift Command, Far East Detachment 219 providing direct fleet support during exercises in Naha Okinawa, and Yokohama and Sasebo, Japan. In April 1991 he was assigned as Executive Officer and then Commanding Officer for Defense Distribution Depot 219, supporting both the Fleet Industrial Supply Center and the Defense Logistic Agency in San Diego CA. After dis-establishing his unit, in January 1995 he was assigned to the Port Hueneme Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center Detachment 219 as Logistic Support Officer providing logistic support to AEGIS and Surface Combatant Fleet units. In October 1998 he was re-assigned to Commander, Naval Forces Korea Headquarters where he was the Logistic Operations Officer, providing direct support to Commander Naval Logistics Forces Korea in-theater for major exercises. CDR Finkel's awards include the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (2), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal(4), Navy Expeditionary Medal (Libya), Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal (2), Korean Defense Medal, Naval Reserve Medal (gold), Expert Rifle Medal, Sharpshooter Pistol Medal, Sea Service Ribbon (w/star) and Overseas Service Ribbon. In his civilian career, CDR Finkel was a Network Engineer/Administrator for 17 years and is now semi-retired. He is married to the former Elvia Maria Navarro of Tonaya, Jalisco, Mexico. He has one son Thomas, a graduate of Georgetown University and Southwestern School of Law who currently resides in Oregon. CDR Finkel and his wife reside in Camarillo, California along with Sam (Shih Tzu) and Mama Kitty.
