Andrew's Story
Life
1976: Buffalo. Wallow in the bliss of mid-70s college ...no real goal.
1978: Kingston. After a boring 6 mths at Met Life, go to Mohonk as a Rustic Carpenter (red cedar - not a tree as much as a life support system for poison ivy).
1980: Albany. Steve Coffey & I create Aardvark Renovation; we keep very busy, earn more experience than $, & eventually drive each other nuts.
1983: Run away to the idyllic wilds of Boulder, Colorado. There are fewer old buildings out west &, thus, fewer opportunities for historic renovation (plus a basic desire to rip down old things & replace them with new cheesy things). I do carpentry, drive a schoolbus (benefits), & eventually find myself at CUBoulder & love the fulfilling ever-changing nature of university life. Combining academics & a need to "make real things," I pursue museum work & exhibit design, & study art history, anthropology, & the natural sciences. I do well (Phi Beta Kappa) & accumulate degrees: BA ...Expand for more
Anthro, BFA Art Hist, MBS Nat.Sci., & MA Art Hist. Living w/ friends in a beat-up house on 17 acres at 8000' w/ all the amenities (horses, hot tub, sweat lodge, home brew, etc.) is heaven on earth. I basically love life, kill time, exploit financial aid, & get the most out of the resources at the CU & my museum job.
1994: Leave Boulder (nicest place I'll ever live); move to Yakima, in the desert of eastern Washington, 2 hours from the Emerald City - Seattle.
I love being an exhibit designer/museum curator, but the work is hard & long, pay is low, & begging for support is a way of life. Seattle has the best music & arts festivals on the planet. I still love music (the newer & stranger the better), go backpacking, take trips to europe as time & money allow, & am now getting itchy to move on - back on the front range of Colorado, in the Taos/Santa Fe area, or in upper New England within 5 years.
I wouldn't move back to Kingston for all the bud in Jamaica.
