Department of Defense, Picatinny Arsenal, NJ - Mechanical/General/Sytems/Environmental Engineer 1975 to March 2007 - My best job was to assess Corrosion Prevention and Control Adequacy for Proposed Materiel to be fielded by the US Army. I worked on projects that helped the Army field the Electrospark Deposition process, which has now been successfully used and can be used as needed on renovations of Army materiel at Anniston Army Depot.
An interesting successful assignment was when I determined the cause of erratic results from a 105mm tank gun mounted at Jefferson Proving Ground. The gun mounts had cracked internally and I spotted the barely visible damage after I viewed the gun drawings and noted where the stresses would be the highest in the design.
I am now retired with 35 years of Department of the Army Civilian service which includes my three years of active duty.
My wife and I like to play tennis and ride recumbent bikes on long rides, like my first long ride of four days covering 240 miles from Booneboro, Maryland to Harrisonburg, VA and back in 2007. My wife's cousin's husband, Ludwig Baumgartner, loves to ride bikes with us on his electrically assisted bike from their home in Nuremberg where we stayed with them. they actually gave us their bedroom and slept in the living room during our multiple visits. This was so loving of them and we always enjoyed our stays wit them. He was 78 years old in 2011. He is German and has led us on many great rides in Germany. In 2008 he led us on one of ten days covering 412 miles from Nuremburg to Vienna, Austria. In 2009 Ludwig led us on one of 15 days covering 550 miles from Nuremburg to the Bodensee and around it, including the Austrian and Swiss sections and Schaffhausen on the Rhein river. In 2010, he led us on one that was about 300 miles along the Main canal from Nuremberg to Aschaffenberg. In 2011 he led us on a 17 day trip of about 650 miles. On that one, we rode from Aschaffenburg after taking a train there from Nuremberg with our bikes. We hit Mainz, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Strasbourg, France; Basel, Switzerland, Schaffhausen, Konstanz, Breganz, Austria and Lindau, Germany. In Lindau we took trains back to Nuremberg for the bargain price of 41 euros including our bikes. That is because they have a Bavaria Pass for 30 euros that lets up to five people go anywhere in Bavaria for the next 24 hours from when you buy the ticket. Ludwig and his wife, who was Thelma's cousin, unfortunately both passed away in 2018, but we will always remember them fondly as we couldn't have done what we did in Germany without their loving help. Ludwig would tour wearing his gray World War Two wool combat breeches (military pants) and was always respected by every German we met on our tours. We had a lot of fun drinking Baugartner Bier on our trips and telling everyone that Ludwig's last name was Baumgartner. We liked the Radler type of beer mixed with lemonade.
