Andy's Story

After high school, I worked at a gas station for a while and then I got an electronics related job at Aeronutronics, a company over by Hawthorne High School. After about a year there, I joined the Navy. At that time, we had to serve for 4 years but in order to guarantee that I would get an electronics job, I agreed to sign up for 6 years. After 5 years, I realized that I didn't have anything interesting to do at home and that I liked the Navy and my place in it. I was a Sonar Technician. Sonar Technicians search for submarines and they also maintain and repair their own Sonar equipment. I spent 5 years in my first ship which was homeported in San Diego. In those 5 years, the ship was sent to Vietnam 3 times and on those cruises, I was able to visit western pacific locations as Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Guam and Hawaii. After leaving that ship, I spent 3 years as an instructor at a Sonar school in San Diego, which is where I met my future wife, who was a Wave. I took advantage of the shore duty to attend San Diego City College at night. I didn't know what, if any, degree I wanted so I just took a lot of general courses. I also bought my first house in East San Diego. It was a small 900 sq. ft. but it was enough for me. After the instructor duty was over, I asked for and got stationed in a ship that was stationed in Gaeta, Italy. Gaeta is located about half way between Naples and Rome. I prepared for the transfer by taking an Italian language course at SDCC. The ship's main duty was to make good will visits to Mediterranean ports, so I got to visit a lot of different places such as Italy, Spain, France, Israel, Egypt, Monaco, Sicily, Greece, etc. While stationed there I returned to the US to get married in 1978, and then my wife got stationed in Naples...Expand for more
. While on leave, we visited a few other places like England, Germany and Austria. We returned to San Diego after I had spent 5 years in Italy. This time my shore duty job was to provide technical assistance to ships when their crew could not repair their Sonar equipment. This was my last Navy assignment and 4 years later I retired with 20 years active duty service. During this time, I returned to SDCC for night school, working towards an Electrical Engineering degree. We also sold my old house and bought another one located near San Diego State University. I got an electronics technician job at a company near the Miramar Navy (now Marine) Air Station after I left the Navy. The company let me work 32 hours a week so that I could go to SDSU to complete my degree. I finally got the degree a few years later and the company gave me an Electrical Engineering position. In 1998 we got a divorce after 20 years. After a few more years, my boss left the company to start his own and I and a coworker went with him. I worked there for 5 years and decided to quit and fully retire in 2003. I sold my San Diego house and bought a replacement in Nevada City, CA near my aging parents, both now deceased. Because of the severe fire danger up here, I spent a good part of the first three years thinning out the thick manzanita brush on my property. I have about two acres left to clean up. Hobbies; who has the time? It seems like I have less leisure time in retirement than I had while working. However, in 2014 I started volunteering as a blacksmith at the Empire Mine State Historic Park. I am still there after 6 years. For exercise and to enjoy the scenery, I ride my road bicycle 25 to 35 miles around Donner Lake or at Lake Tahoe/Squaw Valley once a week. I don't have any children.
