Arthur (Andy)'s Story
Life
Upon graduating I worked briefly at the PD Mercantile in Old Bisbee as a carryout/stocker before going to work underground. I worked on the 800 level of the Cole Mine in South Bisbee as a Mucker for almost two years until Phelps Dodge started shutting down operations. It was during the later that I married Alma Alvarez class of "74". I attended Cochise College and received an A/A certificate in electronics in "77".
I then started work again for Phelps Dodge at Hidalgo Smelter in Playas N.M. The same year we had our first son Chad who was born in Bisbee. I started as a laborer, but worked my way up to Journeyman Instrument Technician and later Computer Technician. In 79 we relocated from Animas to Playas to reside in company housing the same year our second son Aaron was born, also in Bisbee. Playas was a small company town consisting of 240 houses, store & gas, clinic, post office, community center, and baseball fields. Later came a swimming pool and bowling alley. Playas was very centrally located, it was in the middle of nowhere, sixty miles south of Lordsburg. Lordsburg, where my mom and dad went from Bisbee to marry. Lordsburg, where my marriage ended in divorce after seven years, kind of ironic isn't it?
While in Bisbee on the Fourth of July for my ten year reunion, Connie Mecklenburg "78" my sister's best friend was visiting her from Tucson. I got my sister to ask her if she was interested in going with me to the reunion. ...Expand for more
She accompanied me for our first date.
Connie and I lived in Playas until we moved to Tucson and married in 85 where I went to work for Hughes, as a Tester Electronic. I was laid off three years later and went to work briefly for Magma in San Manuel. I accepted a job offer to work for a year at Biosphere II installing process sense, control and data acquisition instruments. I'm now back in the mines at Asarco-Mission Complex going on ten years, third & last generation miner. Connie and I had a good time at my 30 yr. reunion in Bisbee last Labor Day.
School
Over all it was a fun, but awkard time. BHS wasn't so big you would get lost in the crowd, but large enough to keep it interesting.
College
I took advantage to continue my education after being laid off from the mines in Bisbee. I worked as a summer student at the smelter in Douglas and lab assitant at Cochise College to help fund my education. I received my A/A certificate in electronics, then returned to the mines. I have worked mostly as an Instrument Technician using my schooling in electronics.
Workplace
Not much to brag about, but puts the beans on the table. I work presently in the mines, where I worked most of my working life. I've worked at five different mines and for three differnt companies. All previous mine sites I've worked have shut down and the present one has gave warning of possible closeure by Christmas. Two of these companies have been bought out by others.
