I was only there for 71/2 months and then my dad, who was in the military, was transferred back to Canada. From that age on I was raised in Calgary. This past March I was finally able to return to Lahr with my parents and sister to see where I was born and the military base where we lived. I have to say that PMQ's (permanent married quarters) look the same no matter what country you're in. I've always wanted to go there with my whole family and so that wish was crossed off my "bucket List". Growing up in Calgary I had a fairly idyllic childhood. From the time I was 3 my parents had me in every activity they could, since I was a very energetic and outgoing child, or as my friends and family say, a kid who never stopped moving and never had a filter in my head telling me not to say everything that came to mind. I just think I was honest & outgoing. Anyway, starting at the age of 3 I was taking ballet and Jazz. At the very young age of 9 I joined the only Drum & Bugle Corps here in Calgary, The Calgary Cavaliers which in 1990 became Allegiance Elite. I choose Drum Corps over things like the round up or Stampede band because at the time the color guard in a drum corps was doing flag, dance, and rifle work that was light years ahead of what the bands around Calgary were doing. Being in the Corps I spent every summer going on tour for 6-8 weeks through out the US and Canada, sleeping on gym floors and traveling on a bus for sometimes 12-14 hrs at a time and practicing from 9 to 9 some days rain or shine in 110 degree heat with 90 % humidity. When I look back on it now, I wonder how I ever managed to get through that, I guess it was the unending enthusiasm and boundless energy of youth. I loved being a member and my last yr with the Corps was 1993, but sadly I was unable to march my final age out yr due to personal issues, after being a mbr from 1982-93 it was an extreme disappointment to miss out on my age out year. I will be forever grateful to the organization for teaching me responsibility, discipline, the value of hard work, leadership ...Expand for more
skills, respect for authority (most of the time), and that it doesn't matter what the score is or where we place, what matters is whether or not we each gave 110% at every practice and competition. If we did that, then we could stand with our heads held high knowing we had done every thing we could. I know it sounds kinda hokey, but it's true. That old saying "there is no I in team" is also very true. The friends I made in my early days with the Corps I am proud to say are still my best friends today. Actually, they are more like sisters and we've helped each other through our 1st crush, 1sr break up, 1st time in love and the first time we lost that love, we've been there for each others marriages, babies, and the deaths of family members. They were there for me when I got sick and my whole life changed in an instant, they were there when I found out I couldn't have children, even offering to do something for me that most everyone else wouldn't even think to offer and both my friends offered to do this massive favor for me if I ever needed them to. Most recently they were there to help me when I decided my marriage was filled with more pain than it was with love and that I needed to get a divorce. Since my divorce I divide my time between Calgary and Mexico. I spend 6 months during the winter in the Lake Chapala area of Mexico, which is about a half hour to 45 min drive from Guadalajara. I love it there, between the wonderful people, great food, warm weather and the pool in our backyard I have no complaints when I'm there. I'm even learning Spanish, well I know enough to get by in stores & restaurants but I can't carry on a full conversation... Yet! Life in Mexico is a much slower & relaxed pace than here in Calgary & it is definatly cheaper. Although items imported like Kraft Dinner can be crazy expensive. I usually come back to Calgary from April or May to Oct or nov, I usually miss the worst of the cold weather. I am also the proud step mother to a beautiful girl as well as a gramma, which is a little difficult to wrap my brain around. Iesha may not be my biological daughter but I love as if she was. I've been back in Calgary since April 2014 & I am looking forward to spending time with friends and family until I head back to Mexico in Oct 2014. I am very lucky to have the life I live & despite some medical problems I wouldn't change a thing.
